Duke was a very tired team. I knew this UT team would struggle to score in the 70's vs good teams(not greensboro or monroe). UT will play hard but they have no true shooters, so teams will force them to shoot jump shots after the conference starts. Right now teams will experiment with different defenses and rosters, until the season really starts in Jan. UT just cant shoot as witnessed by no three pointers, and have no bigs inside. They will be easy to beat by talented teams with big centers.

The TV commentator mentioned this is not a typical Duke team..they looked more like Cry Babies than Blue Devils..they won't get the kind of officiating in the NCAA they got against the Vols..I saw enough to convince me Martin is an excellent coach and his team is going to give 100%..Good job Vols..

I'm sticking with my predictions ... our basketVols will win more than they lose and they will finish better than 11th in the SEC.

I agree. The prediction that we will finish 11th is absurd. I mean, come on, LSU lost to Coastal Carolina, SC lost to Elon, Miss St lost to Akron & oh yeah, lets not forget, Vandy lost to Cleveland St. Doesn't sound like alot of teams are tearing it up. I wouldn't be surprised if we're around 5th or 6th in the SEC by season's end. No, we can't hang with Kentucky or Alabama, but not many teams will this year. I do like what I saw tonight and we will improve because Coach Martin is actually a true coach and well coached teams always improve.

Why was Duke "... a very tired team?"

richvol writes:

UT fought hard and really hustled but just came up short offensively. Maymon played well but is not a three point shooter so that needs to stop. Tatum took too many off balance shots trying to make something happen. UT looked very patient working the ball into the paint in the first half and got away from it in the second half. If we make our layups we win this game...so many missed. We look like a hard working team and we represented well.

springtx_vol writes:

Having read all of the comments above, there is a lot of complaining about Duke getting the benefit of calls by the refs. Were we watching the same game? The only reason we were in the game was our free throw shooting (when was the last time we said that!). Duke didn't get close to the same number of free throws until they were closing out the game.

We lost this game because Duke had better guards. I haven't looked at the box, but we must have been close in rebounding and points in the paint. And most of Duke's treys were from way out; they just hit them.

If we play this game later in the year, I think it will be just as good of a game. We are definately going to get better the more they play together. I am predicting another trip to the big dance.

Love the effort by UT.

My thing is..

Why does McBee play? Cant score and on D if his man gives him a head fake he falls for it every time. He cant guard ANYONE!

I said it last season, why does Maymon think he is a SG? He jacks up so many jumpers, and he cant shoot. Heck he cant even make it in the paint.

When UT takes a good shot they can play with great teams, they just have a bad habbit of jacking up horrible shots.

Coach Martin has UT playing with more intensity than they have in a long time and he will have UT winning a lot of games.

I really think UT has the perfect coach right now. If he can recruit then UT will be back very soon.

Please play the best players and stop tacking horrible shots. Other than that I love what I am seeing!

Oh, ESPN sure loves to show replay after replay of DUKE highlights, man it got old. And the refs gave every close call to Duke but that is what we as UT fans are used to.

GO VOLS

Hard to blame someone who only played 12 minutes, and took only two shots. Also, it is obvious that you didnt watch the game, because if you had, you would have saw Mcrae getting beat every time down the floor, taking thug playground shots that have no chance to go in, but as usual the white player(who stole the ball from one of the best guards in the country, and shot a layup) only gets to shoot once from the three, and is still leading the team in 3 percentage, with many less attempts than the rest of the players. I did not see anything impresive from Richardson, or Hall, but they continued to get to play, and when we needed a three, Mcbee was not even concidered as an option. As usual, someone who has favorites, and does not actually understand Basketball, tries to post and defend those who do not play D, and get beat by their man, and take bad shots(Mcrae) and everything is OK. Sure hope some educated vol fans start to post, or it will be a long and troublesome season.

Have you even tried (even reluctantly, at first, and with any encouragement from any coaches and teammates) being a starter??
Can you imagine yourself doing what the Curry and Rivers guys doing (trying to create something, driving more towards the basket, making mid-range jump shots, rebounding, getting to the free-throw line more often)??
WHAT IN THE WORLD have you grown (except for a mustache) to learn in at least two seasons to be an even better player and to help this or a future Vols team to the Final Four or a national title??

On a separate matter, the reports of the demise of the basketball program may have been premature. Cautiously, I like what I see from Coach Martin. At least they are hustling and look like they care about competing which can go a long way when you are limited on talent.

Those who so desperately defended Pearl for playing his son over Maymon last year look really smart right about now, LOL. If Maymon had been given most of Pearl's minutes (as he should have), where would he be now. As I stated previously, lack of player development was a serious issue with the previous staff. Not the case here. The halfcourt offensive and defensive sets were very impressive tonight. We simply had a knife in a gun fight. Duke just out talented us, along with the blue devil alumni refs. As for the missed layups, yeah they hurt. But we must remember, our bigs are 6'6"-6'8". Duke has 3 6'11" dudes. Easy t sit here and say we should have made them, but its tough sledding out there amongst those big fellas. Maymon missed some should makes but dang, boy is a beast! Golden is a horse as well. Swiper needs to go to the studio and remain there. He's hard to watch. Hard to not think that with the same talent, coach zo would have spanked coach K! There is reason to be excited about our hoops program. I know a certain part of the fambase is still crushed that Pearl embarrassed the program, got he and his entire staff fired, but if you would please stand up and support coach Zo. This man is gonna do GREAT GREAT things over on the hill. Peace out....

Thanks!! I wrote that, in part, after watching Kentucky and Kansas. No doubt, it appears to be a part of Kentucky's tradition of having more players (whether or not they can be considered "star" players) who try to create, etc. instead of just relying on just a few star starter players. If the Jones guy got injured and was out for the season, I still think Kentucky is a force to be reckoned with, especially for a national title. UH OH!! Golden gets in foul trouble early! The Vols didn't exactly panic, and it is very early in the season, and they did give Duke a scare in the first half and partly in the second half, but Woolridge, Maymon (who was expected to prosper last year), Hall, McBee, and Tatum (is this not his senior year?) could have stepped up more and possibly won this game (or maybe even sent it into overtime).

CC took these guys and went toe to toe with #6 Duke, and with less talent AND size played them as close as anyone this year. To me that says alot about Coach Martin and these players, they deserve some respect for their early progress under a new coach.

Actually so far Tennessee has been an EXCELLENT shooting team...now I know what the handicapper part stands for....you are correct though about the playing hard part....they will definitely do that...Pastner is already building the Vols up as the second coming of, well the Vols that had them by the throat for 36 points last year....Vols will have to play hard and slow it down...hit a few threes to beat Memphis tomorrow...but if history proves anything...Vols can beat Memphis any year...never count them out....Oh and I need to know who you handicap for...not a betting man but I might have to be now...NOT!

Just shut the hell up, MentallyHandicapped, and save everyone the time. Your drivel is getting old. You have absolutely no knowledge of any sport. Every statement you make is proven wrong.
