Any news out there on how the recruiting weekend went? Who are legitimate targets from here out? I dont want to sign up for a free trial, or pay, or go on other school sites. As a UT alum, tax paying citizen, and member of the 1st world, I would actually like some news...doesn't have to be much....just some actual reporting from somewhere that isn't a pay site. Does that even exist? Why is there even a govols site if you have to pay to get news other than someone's twitter comment or a score recap?
Very good points you make about coaching up the players you have. You have to have very good talent to win big in the SEC. The recruiting rankings over the years have proven that. But coaching is imperative.
Saban did great his second year with the talent he had. Meyer did great his second year with the talent he had. Mullen did great his second year with the talent he had. Chizik did great his second year with the talent he had. All of these coaches took over programs that were down and IMPROVED the players and programs without using excuses or throwing their players under the bus saying they weren't any good.
Dooley is the ONLY coach in the SEC who took over a programs that was down, and made the players and program worse it's second year.

I don't deny coaching is a large part of the equation to the success of any team in any sport, but you comparing the other programs and where they were in the second year with their coaches to what Derek Dooley inherited is just wrong.
I'm not saying Derek Dooley is the answer, but I won't hang him out to dry just yet.
Saban, Meyer and the rest of the guys you mentioned had a lot of juniors and seniors to work with their second year. Chris Leak at Florida was a senior quarterback. Cam Newton at Auburn was a JC transfer, one and done, I might add. And while Auburn made it to a bowl game last year, the Tigers weren't so mighty without a couple of JC guys that helped them win the title and their best running back just bailed on them.
None of those teams lost their best DB, and probably best defensive player, before the season started. None of them lost their best receiver in the first conference game or their quarterback a couple of weeks later.
You are comparing apples to oranges because you are only looking at won-loss records not the total scope of everything that happened during the year or the situation each coach walked into at the time he took his respective job.

Have you ever tried SCOUT.COM, ESPN.COM or RIVALS.COM? They all have recruiting news that is updated constantly.
Like all Vols fans I had hoped for a last minute, great, recruiting coup such as Dooley has pulled off previously. The fact that he has offered one of the few remaining visits that are allowed, and one of the even more precious scholarships to a two star defensive end pretty much dashes such hopes. Oh well, I guess I should be I should be used to having all my hopes for UT athletics crushed.
That's all well and good that we will likely have a top 15 recruiting class. Top 15 out of 117 D1 schools is pretty good... It would be fantastic if we were in the Big East! Unfortunately, we will rank 6th or 7th in the SEC... Not good enough Doolittle.

Very good post and you are correct sir. Dooley inherited much more of a mess and shouldn't be compared to other coaches that didn't endure the same problems. How would chizk have done at UT last year, how bout urban? With a freshman QB and a depleted roster I would find it difficult for Knute rockney to excel with this roster. I also am not sure Dooley is the answer but I will start grading this year. The man has recruited well and finally has an experienced o-line and some depth. This year with an easier schedule and a powerful offense the vols will be much improved. Dooley haters just may be upset when tenn wins 8 or 9 games this year.

Rivals only has 2 schools ahead of tenn in recruiting and one of them played in a NC. So 6 or 7 don't think so. Dooleys classes never falter as his commits usually stand firm. They have lost two kids both juco guys at that. The other 3 Dooley parted ways with. To be ranked #11 and 3rd in the SEC is pretty darn good considering the team is 5-7 and other coaches use that to steer kids away. You are obviously a Dooley hater by referring to him as Doolittle. Why does everyone that hates him call him names. Are we in the third grade? it sounds immature and indicates the maturity level behind the person who writes it. For the record I wasn't a fan of the hiring but I think given the turmoil and attrition added to numerous injuries to key players I think he has done a good job but we need him to do a great job. A head coach doesn't have to be a great coach if he surrounds himself with the right people. Dooley Is running a business and he needs to be a great recruiter and CEO for Tennessee. His staff should be able to coach kids up and get them ready to play. His job is to get quality people in the right places and organize the program. I hope he succeeds so all the Dooley haters can find another team to root for. Bunch of fair-weather fans. This is not a video game, you can't just trade players or turn it down to rookie until your team gets good.
Just saw on TV talk show that Santos is probably heading to Texas, despite his comments that UT's new DC was the man and he was all-in for Tennessee. Can anyone confirm? It was not ESPN, maybe a Fox Sports South channel.
