Charlie Strong REALLY!, that stinks, thats the best we could do, let him know how louisville does vs florida, Im sure the rest of the SEC coaches will tell us what a great hire he is, wonder why florida didn't hire him then when Urban Meyer left. STRONG IS THE WRONG CHOICE IF THEY HIRE HIM.
Why didn't Florida didn't hire him to replace Meyer? Well, first, how do you know they didn't ask him through back channels about his interest? You don't. He had only been at Louisville one year at that point. If you hire a coach who, under no duress, will leave somewhere else after one year you probably aren't getting a guy who will be loyal to you either. Second, with only one year's HC experience they probably weren't sure he could handle a program of Florida's scope. I doubt they would think that now. Third, Louisville's performance against Florida in the Sugar Bowl will have absolutely no bearing on his ability to coach Tennessee or any prognostic value as to how we would fare against Florida (or any other SEC opponent) down the road. At Louisville he does not have SEC caliber players. At Tennessee he will, if not now in the future. That's like saying Saban can't coach because Bama couldn't beat the Bears. So what? Beating your peer group at one level translates almost every time to continuing that trend at higher levels. I can't wait to see what he can do recruiting and coaching. Bring him on. Go Vols!!!
Most of the ppl on this board wanted to hire a proven coach if Charlie Strong isn't considered proven I don't know who is look at what he has done with Louisville with limited resources. And for those pointing out Louisville's record against Florida and are trying to say that is why he shouldn't be hired are morons. Look at Louisville's recruiting classes versus Florida's it is hard to beat a team that is in a state full of talent who all they dreamed about since being kids was playing for the Gators. Of course only time will tell if we do hire him if it was a good decision however, the same could be said about any coach they hire. I firmly believe the ppl on here who wouldn't be happy with Strong being the coach are still stuck on Gruden which was never going to happen in the first place. Stop being delusional and start being realistic because you are setting yourself up for disappointment if your still stuck on Gruden.
I agree, Gruden is covered in cobbwebbs and has never been a college head coach, Strong is a much better choice and will recruit well especially in Florida. He will bring discipline, as well energy and enthusiasm back to our team, which has been a problem in the past.Plus he looks like mirine drill sergeant instead of a pansy like the last two head coaches!!
Mark my words, if true, this is a very bad move. I really hoped the Vols could do better. I should have known better than to get my hopes up. You would think that after 64 years I would know better. Oh well, it's just football. Jimmy Sexton strikes again.
You are a dope. Charlie Strong doesn't have an agent.
Totally freaking agree, THIS WILL BE WORSE THAN THE DOOLEY HIRE! WHY? Because expectations will be through the roof and this guy will lead us to 2-3 years of 4th and 3rd places finishes in the SEC East and after Dooley everybody will be satisfied, WE SERIOUSLY HAVE BECOME OLE MISS< MISS STATE, He will NOT out recruit FSU and Fl, GA, SC , LSU, ALA, TEXAS A&M, or ARK. If we hire this guy it is going to be three to four more years of flipping misery.
must not have had much to choose from, why charlie strong. should have just kept dooley
Research Strong's record as an HC and then research Dooley's and then make an intelligent post. Either your not a VOL fan or you are a moron. Dooley couldn't hold Strong's jockstrap when it comes to football.
Charlie Strong has been my pick for next coach of the Vols all along . . check out the resume: Played & graduated from Central Arkansas in 1983, coached under Charley Pell (Fla 83-84) Jackie Sherill( Texas Am '85) Galen Hall (Fla '88-89) Billy Brewer (Ole Miss, '90) Asst HC under Steve Spurrier (Fla 91-94 ) Lou Holtz (Notre Dame 95-98 & then became the first African-American D.C. in the SEC @ S.C. 99-01) Ron Zook(Florida DC from '02-04) Then was retained by Urban Myer to continue as DC for Fla. from 05-09. From '07-'09 Louisville was 6-6, 5-7, 4-8 . . Coach Strong took over & from 2010-present 6-6, 7-5, 9-2. He's also solid recruiter with ties all over the SEC. Hire Coach Strong, retain Jim Chaney as OC, Jay Graham-RB, Sam Pitman-OL, & go get Tee Martin to solidify recruiting. I think he would love to come home.
Charlie Strong REALLY LMAO, We just took another 4 steps backward, nice job on the coaching search if we hire this guy, we knew back in October Dooley was gone, We should have already had our coach PERIOD!
My understanding is Strong wants to coach in the SEC, is not happy with the fan support at Louisville and now that UT is the last available SEC HC position left, it looks like he is probably going to get the job.
We could do worse. I just hope our fans understand that we will be doing well to win 7 games the next couple of years no matter who the coach is.
If we couldn't get Gruden (was there ever a doubt?) and we couldn't bring ourselves to hire Petrino, then I guess Stong is as good a fallback as we could hope for. I just hope he can recruit better than he did at Louisville.

I will reply with the same comment I used with somebody else on here. Research Strong's record as an HC and then research Dooley's and then make an intelligent post. Either your not a VOL fan or you are a moron. Dooley couldn't hold Strong's jockstrap when it comes to football.
"Strong, the Gators’ defensive coordinator the past seven years, has been one of Urban Meyer’s top recruiters. Brandon Spikes, Janoris Jenkins, Joe Haden, Reggie Nelson and Jon Bostic are just some of the names Strong has pulled to Gainesville in the last five years." Ben Volin, palm Beach post; 2010 . . .
"In 1999, Strong joined the South Carolina Gamecocks as defensive coordinator, becoming the first African American coordinator in Southeastern Conference (SEC) history. His stifling defenses and charismatic personality created buzz that he would be possibly the first black head coach in the SEC, but job offers were slim. Sylvester Croom eventually broke the color barrier in the SEC coaching ranks." . . . ."When they see what he can do, you're probably going to have a lot of people disappointed they didn't hire him sooner." (Tony Dungy,2010)
I rate Strong as the best of the three, which as Vols fans, we expected from our AD. The only guy you mentioned that I would be reasonably happy with outside of Strong would be Larry Fedora. No way on Gundy, although I don't see him leaving his alma mater. But Strong was the pick of the hot coaches club this year. And it certainly seems like we are in good shape to get him.
I like Strong as well. Time will tell on Bielema. I'm just not sure how good a fit he'll be at Arky. Not that impressed with Malzahn. And he's going to find the sledding rough trying to get attention in that state and facing major NCAA probation.
Playoffs! Your talking Playoffs! What Playoffs! Are we going to get a 3rd and 4th place trophy in the SEC EAST when STRONG is our coach because thats about as high as he is going to finish, 2 7-6 seasons at Louisville , yeah he sure out coached that powerhouse league.
Mark my words, if true, this is a very bad move. I really hoped the Vols could do better. I should have known better than to get my hopes up. You would think that after 64 years I would know better. Oh well, it's just football. Jimmy Sexton strikes again.
Since you know it all, what would you consider better? Vague statements like this don't give credibility regardless of your age.
Louisville is in the process of moving to the ACC. That will keep Strong at Louisville, Strong has expressed loyalty because Louisville gave him a shot when he was passed over for HC by so many other schools.
If Tennessee hires him watch out because Tennessee will be back on top of the SEC in a few seasons.

Who was better that we could have gotten? To get someone "better" than Strong I'll give you several coaching pools to choose from. Pool A: wildly successful coaches at established BCS powerhouses (regular NYD bowl game participants, BCS bowl at least every third year, and playing in NC at least once every 5 years), you're talking Stoops, Meyer, Saban, Miles, Brown, Kelly. Nope, none of them are leaving to fix us. Pool B - relatively successful coaches in BCS conferences (mostly NYD bowls, occasional conference champion/BCS visit, rarely if ever NC hopes), men like Snyder, Gundy, Bielema, Petrino, Strong, Patterson. Pool C: up and coming guys like Jones, Hudspeth, Hazell, Golden, Fedora. Pool D: coordinators with big names. Pool E: NFL guys - Gruden, Cowher, Roman.
Can't get Pool A, Pool C are unproven, Pool D are even more risky unless hired from within, and Pool E is fantasy if for nothing else than the financials. That leaves Pool B which is where Hart has been looking. Strong is as good as anybody there and should fit in well at UT. I just want to know whom you think would have been better than Strong, given that we can only hire those men who want the job? Go Vols!!!
My understanding is Strong wants to coach in the SEC, is not happy with the fan support at Louisville and now that UT is the last available SEC HC position left, it looks like he is probably going to get the job.

OMG . . Gruden was never coming to Tennessee and it's just a name . . go check his overall record. . .My thoughts on J. Gruden: "Despite the Super Bowl win, there were many, including players on the Buccaneers like Warren Sapp, who attributed Gruden's win primarily to the defense that coach Tony Dungy and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin had created during Dungy's tenure with the Bucs. Gruden, for his part, publicly and graciously thanked Dungy for his contributions upon accepting the Lombardi Trophy at the Super Bowl XXXVII postgame ceremony." . . ."In the two years following Gruden's Super Bowl win, the Bucs went 7–9 and 5–11 respectively, implying to many Dungy supporters that Gruden had simply taken over a strong team and then driven it into the ground." . . "the Buccaneers went winless in the month of December, in no small part due to a defensive collapse that saw the team give up an average of 30.75 points per game. On December 28 the Buccaneers were eliminated from making the playoffs by the Oakland Raiders, the team Gruden left for Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers ended the season with four losses in a row, and Jon Gruden was FIRED by the Buccaneers on January 16, 2009, after seven seasons with the team

I like the idea of having Strong if it does happen and I hope you are correct about being at the top of the SEC in a few seasons. However, only time will tell we know this much Strong expects the most out of his players it is obvious because he doesn't have a lot of talent at Louisville and still produces victories. Vol nation wants a proven coach and this man has proven himself with a team and a conference most kids don't want to play for. I really hope it is Strong and I hope if it is I am not regretting it later on.
Well, all things considered, Charlie Strong is the best at this point. He was always successful as a DC and his years at Louisville have been good. He has recruited better than UT has for the last few years. Heck, it could not get much worse could it. I think Strong will be able to recruit and I heard he has a relationship with Trooper Taylor and that would be another recruiting tool (emphasis on tool). I really don't know what kind of a coach Taylor is but he is a good cheerleader and towel waver for sure. His problem is he does not follow the rules and that could be a killer. I hope he leaves trooper alone. Time will tell but I think he could be a good selection.
I don't want that thug Taylor anywhere around Knoxville after the cr@p he pulled at Aubie. UT doesn't need that loser, or Charlie doesn't need to be our coach..JAT.
I really detest people like PureOrange and the like. You just knew they were waiting for news like this so they they could blow it off. To all you fools, I say this: Go find yourself another team. Heck, become a Vandy fan, but PLEASE leave! PureOrange my butt.
This should get us upward toward 70,000 butts in the seats for a while.
No doubt, if he couldn't get 50,000 at Louisville with a 10&2 season his brand of FB must really be boring. I will say this, if he wins 10 games at UT then those seats will fill to capacity. Just win baby and UT will love you..GBO!!
