Cincy was tied with UT and had UT on the ropes. Pead (Cincinnati) ran for 156 yards, and 1 td. Dooley actually called for an onside kick that UT recovered (what happens if they don't?) and Tyler Bray threw 2 quick TDs. Tyler had a career day with 400 yards.

Then you have people saying he coached in a different league and this is the SEC. You can't have it both ways. If he was so outgunned then you shouldn't have expected miracles, yet he was close to pulling one off until an onside kick, and a talented QB made up for it.

Think if he had the talented guys? hmmm

Fulmer ran himself off, not updating his staff properly. Keeping up with recruiting over the last few years, and basically losing to some smaller schools.

Only 1 coach officially received a contract and only 2 total were "real" targets, Strong and Gundy.

B. Jones has beat Vandy, in a bowl game no less.

Top recruits are tweeting they like B. Jones, cant say that's happened before, Kiffin did get some online fans.

I dont see a disgrace, we don't have an out of control program. Remember Kentucky went through a few coaches in basketball recently, Tubby,Billy Gillispie, Calipari.

Alabama went through,Dennis Franchione,Mike Price,Mike Shula,Joe Kines(interim), then they found a guy named, Nick Saban.

Calm down.

How about this, give this guy a chance. He has 6 yrs head coaching experience. Dooley had 1 and it was 4-8 I believe. Kiffin had 1 yr. at Oakland. B. Jones is 50-27 over 6 yrs as head coach.

This guy has a ton more experience than both those guys combined, so based off that alone he deserves a bit more respect or at the very least a chance.

Next, He brings out fast and furious pro style offense. Ut is going to run and pass the football...ummmm what else would you do with the ball on offense? Then he hits on the special teams saying his teams were always 1st and 2nd in the CONF. Really is that saying much? Oh then comes the great plan for Defense...."Ball Destruction" cause fumbles. I think you're being a spoiled brat..First off UT quit recruiting Tennessee back when Majors took over. Dooley was just following suit by recruiting nationally, and to be honest, Tennessee doesn't have enough D1 talent to fill a roster. That's why you need a coach that can recruit Ohio, Pennsylvania and West of the Mississippi. It doesn't hurt to recruit well in the South either. All of this selfish whining isn't going to change a thing, so in essence it's wasted energy..JAT.

Good point Bob, these whiners are unbelievable. Practically every major sports reporter has endorsed this hire as one of the best during the coaching carousel last week. I wanted a splash hire also and everything pointed to Gruden or Roman as targets, but when it was obvious Jones was the man I quickly got on board. The man can flat out coach, and unlike some other hires (most notably Kiffin&Dooley) he is a proven commodity..GBO!

I hope fans understand it takes a commitment to turn a program around. That means a min. of 6 yrs to see what a coach can really do. When the bad times come you have to ride the ship.

I can guarantee you he will not have six years if his performance is anything like the previous coach.

sly_stone99#434111 writes:

in response to FWBVol:

Get a clue. What do you expect him to do or say? Would you rather him tell talk about a Tennessee Swagger, which has been missing for a while, or telling the team how impossible next year's schedule is.

Part of turning a program around is setting the tone mentally and physcologically.

There's an old joke the late Jerry Clower used to tell about a rancher that had three bulls and several hundred cows. Well one day the bulls hear the rancher talking to his foreman about how he was going to be bring in a new bull for breeding.

So the oldest of the three bulls says to the other two, "I'm the king of this pasture. I've been here more than 10 years and I've got 50 cows that are mine. That new bull isn't going to get any of them from me."

The second bull speaks up and says, "I've been here about five years and I've got about 20 cows and that new bull isn't messing with my good thing just bring him on."

Finally the youngest bull speaks up and says, "I've only been here two years and I only have five cows, but that new bull had better not try to take any from me either."

So the day comes when the new bull arrives and before it gets out of the trailer the trailer is shaking like it's in a tornado. And then out steps the biggest, baddest bull any of the other three had ever seen a snorting and kicking up dust.

So the first bull speaks up and said, "Maybe I was a little hasty. I think I can share the wealth." The second bull said, "I think you're right. I have plenty of cows that I can miss a few."

About that time they hear the youngest bull making a grunting noise and paw the ground looking at the new bull. The old bull said, "Boy, don't you know that new bull will tear you apart?" To which the young bull replied, "You're probably right, but I thought he'd best know that one of us is still a bull."

Butch Jones is simply reminding the Vol players that they are still bulls. If you go into a season thinking you're whipped, then you are.

Now that's what I'm talking about. Well said! CBJ is exorcising out this snake bit mentality and getting these guys on the recovery road. Next year might be tough, but I believe when November rolls in he'll have this team playing smash mouth football once again win or lose we'll have teams walking off the field thinking this ain't the Dooley teams they played before.

We were at the top and fell. Now it IS the time to get our swagger back. It is time for the fans to also get their swagger back. Coaches lives are short professionally and only the strong survive. We have a tiger and now has a school that can attract some four and five star players. There are diamonds in the rough as well so we need to hold judgement until we check see the product put on the field. Dont forget, Steve Spurhead has not won an SEC championshp at USC but is considered a top SEC coach. He always loses games every year that cost him and USC their goals so how high do we set the bar? Look at it this way. Your defense was horrific last year, and is just as short on talent going in to next year, and having to learn ANOTHER new scheme. Your offense was Bray to Patterson/Hunter. All three will be gone. Who is going to take over at QB? Who will he throw the ball to? And your run game is, well, iffy. Now look at the schedule. FL UGa Bama USC Oregon. That's 5 losses, no question. Auburn, Vandy and Mizzou are not looking good either. Western Kentucky? South Alabama? Kentucky? Austin Peay? I don't see a single game where UT can absolutely count on a win, other than Austin Peay.

It's going to be very difficult for Jones to recruit if ya'll are tearing in to him for the mess next year is going to be. It will be tough, but you have to remain positive, or you will torpedo him before he has a chance to make an impact.

Just cold, hard facts.

I agree with you that Vol fans need to be patient. Some will be and some will not. I disagree that the Vols are quite as bad off as you seem to think. The point about the tough schedule is certainly valid, and the defense surely left a lot to be desired.

Those things said, the offense is not as bad off as you suggest. Even if the "Big Three" leave, Justin Worley is a decent alternative as a QB. He may not have Bray's raw talent, but he seems more mature and has the tools to excel. It is too bad that he couldn't have gotten more playing time, but he should at least have the advantage of most of the reps with the first team. In Howard, Croom, and Dallas, we have some good prospects at WR. It is to be hoped that they at least will learn to run real routes--as Patterson never seemed to do--and won't short-arm balls and dance around as much as Hunter.

As for the running game, while it is true that none of the current backs look like world-beaters, the O-line is more than sound and the Vols nearly doubled their rushing production over the previous year. Many of us thought some of the shortcomings of the rushing game were due to Chaney's emphasis on the pass. In several of our games, they ran the ball well in the first half and then all but abandoned the run in the second.

As for the defense, there was a lack of speed in the secondary, which surely must be fixed, but they had constant problems lining up correctly all year, too. Maybe the new staff will at least have everybody in the right position at the start.

We will just have to see how it all works out and there is no doubt that the odds are against them, but if Jones can just get everybody on the same page, cut out some of the unforced errors, and make better in-game decisions, we might see real progress right away.
