I don't know if athletes are held to the same standard as regular students at UC, but it is one of the higher-rated academic institutions in the country. Of course, your post also suggests that UC players are not as good on the field as those of the elite programs, which may be true, but as others have said and you imply, you just don't get the number of outstanding athletes at a UC that is the norm in the SEC. We can surely hope that Jones can parlay his own recruiting skills and UT's assets into landing a class that can help us win.
Hopefully that fresh start includes this person...ManVol in the VolNation posted this under the heading Tee Martin Just Landed.
I just met him at McGee-Tyson airport. Him and his beautiful wife and child just got off an airplane while I was eating at Ruby Tuesday. Couple people took pictures . I didn't get my phone out in time but did shake his hand. Didn't want to hold him up. GBO.
I really liked his comments about finding coaches that can teach rather than just present.
Athletically your athletes are who they are. But if they are well coached use the proper technique and are in the proper position when playing, and do not make non effort mistakes a team is then really hard to beat.
On defense we lacked speed in the secondary this year but were also prone to lining up wrong and using the wrong technique.
This is a sign of poor teaching i.e. coaching.
Living in Alabama over the years I have heard a lot regarding Bear Bryant. He described a conversation he had with a parent of his players over why the kid was not playing more.
He told the Father that athletically his son was fine but he wasn't learning their system well enough to play.
The Father told Bryant the he was the coach and it was his responsibility to teach players the proper technique and if they were not learning the coaches were not doing their job.
Afterwards, Bryant said to his coaches that in his opinion the Father was right.
We really don't need fans (?) like you Take your negative arse back to Candyland and stay there. GBO VFL

You certainly have a right to your view..but I do not share that view..unrealistic expectations proved to be a negative last year..the chance UT could beat S Car..Ga..or Vandy next year is slim at best and will take an unbelievable coaching job..Vandy is stocked at qb and has 4 star recruit..their #2 and 3# running backs are better than anything UT has..Matthews and Boyd both return..UT's offensive line is all that is better than Vandy's and they make up for a lack of talent with execution..if UT wins 5 it will be a good coaching year..if UT wins 6 ..it will be a great coaching year..if UT wins 7 it will be a minor miracle..as I see it UT needs at least 2 years to be expected to be competitive..one comment I heard was..what if UT had not got Jones..then what..if you think about that ..Jones obviously was a good choice at the time..so I hope UT fans do not start with the 8-4, 9-3 junk like last year..and judge the results on the situation he starts in..

The more I read and hear about CBJ the more I like this hire. He is not the "sexy" hire we all wanted but I believe he is the real deal. He wanted to be here and did not play games with Hart. I cannot wait to see the team take the field next year. GO BIG ORANGE!!!
Derek Who?
I agree except for "Derek Who?". I know Coach Dooley did not get the job done, but I believe he gave it his all and did some good things like "VOL FOR LIFE". Therefore, I think we should treat him with kindness, unlike "cutthroat Kiffin".
So basically, y'all have hired the Cincinnati Bearcats staff, plus Graham and maybe Tee Martin.
I guess that's better than the band of goofballs you've had the last three years. I mean, was Cincinnati that impressive? Imprressive enough to challenge in the SEC?
Time will tell, but next year, you're looking at 5 wins again, at best.
All I would say is Coach please recruit kids that are 3 star and above. I saw the Cincy 2013 recruiting list and indeed understand that class might work in the Big East and at Cincy, but not in the SEC. Some how I think you already know this.
I would rather he recruited kids who fit his system and didn't worry about stars.
I like what I see in Coach Jones so far. I'm not gonna say I'll back him UNTIL he proves me wrong, because until tells me we expect him to fail sooner or later, but instead UNLESS he proves me wrong. As far as Bray, Hunter, and CP are concerned, while I do agree they should stay, I would rather them go to the NFL if their hearts aren't fully going to be in this team and this season. We need players who truly want to be here and who want to give their all for Tennessee. Plus if they do leave, you never know what kind of season their replacements might be able to pull off. After all, I guarantee Texas A&M had no idea they had a Heisman winning freshman quarterback at the beginning of the season. I guess my point is that we can't freak out or get upset if we lose key players, but instead look for players to come in behind them and prove they can be just as good or better. Here's to new era of UT football. Go Vols!
What is all this stuff Hart is saying, about talking to players and coaches about Jones. He didn't speak to him before 10pm thursday night. I don't think he talked to anybody about Jones before then because he thought someone else would take the job first, especially Strong. And I know he didn't call a former player or coach at 3am Friday........

Dooley's recruiting classes were consistently better than Vandy's the last three years. We have more talent at most positions. How is Vandy "stocked" at QB??? Ha!! Our QBs will prove to be better than Vandy's. Our RBs are every bit as good. Not sure where you are getting your data from. I'm not expecting 8 wins, but 7 is not a stretch.

DeltaCharlie, I don't know who you are. But I think it's really weird that you like to post on Tennessee's fan site. Regardless of your opinions, wouldn't your favorite team be better served by commenting on their website rather than ours? I don't mind your comments...you have a right to post anything. But normally functioning people don't spend their time this way. Maybe you should ask a girl out...you know, go on a date. Maybe try to kiss her even. Just hate to see someone wasting their time behind a computer all day.
I figure Bray,Patterson and Hunter are gone. We lose Rivera also, but I'm really hoping that James stays for Sr. year. Our line would be awsome and really help our new QB whether it be Worley,Peterman or one of the freshmen.

You don't thnk they screened more than one candidate at a time during a two week period? I would guess you are wrong.

I think Rivera is a senior. Hunter is gone, he is a projected 1st round pick and on a lot of plays this year he looked like he was afraid of getting hurt (which is understandable).
Neither Bray or Patterson are ready for the next level. I hope for their sake that they realized that. Bray needs to learn how to take care of the ball against good defenses and Patterson needs to learn how to run routes.
If I, and most fans know this, you can be sure the scouts do.
Unless we pick up a running back like Derrick Green, we'll need to spread the field to take advantage of the guys we have to throw and catch the ball.
It's pretty clear Jones gets that and it also appears he is bringing some coaches who know how to coach defense (and that we must find some speed in the secondary).
All in all I'm beginning to feel pretty good about Jones. I also realize the schedules we have for the next two years and 7-5 seasons would be better than good results.
I really like butch jones I hope this works. Tuberville wanted this job.Jimmy Hyams said on the radio on fri in birmingham AL jox radio. said that Tubbervile told Tennessee "I have a winning record against nick saban and I can beat him again" here is the link. http://www.joxfm.com/Article.asp?id=2... Tommy tubbs stats Undefeated season, won the sec west 5 out of the ten years he coached. I do not believe there is no big bama hart conspiracy but he has sec experience and he wanted the job. I hope there was a good reason he did not get offered the job.
I think slugging an assistant coach on the sideline might be considered a good reason. That clip would have been played over and over if we had hired him. Fair or not.

This was not a linear search where he only thought about one candidate at a time. In order to be put on the original list of potential coaches (about five) background information, including talking to previous players etc. was done. Geez, have you never conducted a hiring search?
You are responsible for your own expectations and you should not depend on 18-22 year old kids to fulfill them for you ... and acting all dorky if they are not fulfilled. My data comes from common sense..you sound like one the nutcases predicting 9 or 10 wins last year and anyone who did not see it was an idiot or moron..I thought UT would go 7-5 and I was wrong .look at UT's schedule..sure I hope UT gets 7 wins.. but it is a stretch and will take a minor miracle..if Jones pulls that off..he is one heck of a coach..and as I said ..it will be a great coaching job if UT wins 6... you are entitled to your opinion just as I am mine..and yours and mine mean exactly the same..nothing...sad thing about last year..Walt seems to be the only one I know who got it right..5-7..hope he predicts at least 6 this year..we'll see...

OP ..as usual you make about as much sense as anyone would expect from someone who never figured out that Dooley was not suited to be a head football coach at UT..if you could understand writing ..you could see that my expectations are for fans to be reasonable..I wrote if UT wins 5 it is a good coaching job..if they win 6 it is a great coaching job..if they win 7 .. it is a minor miracle..now what about that reflects a negative attitude..unless you are one of the nuts on here last year after the NC State game ranting about UT would go 9-3 or 10-2 and anyone who did not agree was and idiot or moron..how did that turn out..as I said I predicted 7-5 and I was just stupid..did you not make the idiot catagory...and you too ..Have a nice day..and I enjoy conficting opinions just as much as you do..
Hi Gerry, so what is the pronostication for next years Vol squad? The same as you predicted this year or better?
Hey cal! Really, even with a stable team and coaching staff, I'm not smart enough to predict W-L records. I'm sure that some of these rocket surgeons could sit down and predict every game and their reasons ... even though no one knows what the team will look like! For the '14 season too!
However, like I usually do, I can set goals! Just like Coach Jones said on Friday ... CHAMPIONSHIPS! 14-0 BABY ... 14-0!

'Splain me to something? We know absolutely nothing about the '12 team. So how is it possible to predict any kind of record?
Oh, and being negative? Why is it that Coach Dooley bringing home 5-7 record got him fired, but if Jones brings home a 5-7 record it's "good coaching?" If 5-7 in '12 was negative why isn't 5-7 in '13 negative? Sounds like we could have kept Dooley and saved $17 mil.

Splain to you this..if you know nothing about the 12 team ..you are even more stupid than your writing indicates..their record is facts..now for the rest of the story..the scedule for the 2013 ..Oregon..bama..Ga..S Car..Fla..5 games..all likely to be favored over the Vols..Austin Peay..W Ky..S Ala.. 3 games should be wins..4 others..Vandy, Mizzu, Ky, and Auburn..UT lost to Vandy and Mizzu last year..did not play Auburn..and beat Ky..if UT beats the 3 they should and Ky ..which they should ..that would be 4..if they beat Auburn, Mizzu, or Vandy that would be 5..and I am saying it would be a good coaching job..if they win 2 of those 3 ..which would be 6 wins..I am saying it would be a great coaching job because they would have to beat Vandy or Mizzu ..which they did not do last year..if they win 7 or more..UT fans will have more than good reason to be hopeful the Vols are on the way up..Dooley was a part of the high expectations for last year and getting stomped by Vandy was too much and would have been disaster for attendance..are you still saying ..should have kept Dooley..man you talk about negative..that is off the charts..
I don't know about this as CBJ said he would run an "Up Tempo" offense. Uptempo offenses wins games, Power Offenses & Defense wins Championships.....Hmmm, can somebody tell me in the last 15 years how many up tempo offenses have won the BCS Ship....hmm, I'll wait!!
1BJ + 1DD + or - several asst coaches=17 million dollars over the next 6 years(not including the money recently paid PF, thank goodness LK left on his own accord), poor ol Rocky Top...literally!

And I thought paying $50,000 for a HUMMER was high.
I don't understand any negativity around this hire. This is a good hire. Jones has a track record of success and clearly wants to be here. The last guy that left Cincy did pretty well in his next job. And as for being the 6th or 7th choice, sometimes that works out. Mora was at least there, and so was Pete Carroll. I am glad we didn't take what was a risk on Gruden (remember Bill Callahan) and I am especially glad we didn't hire Gundy. It seems like that all offense and suspect defense plan didn't really work well for us last year.
Jones is pumped about being here so let's get on board with his program.

Oh stop. The point is you are just guessing ... which is OK. But there are no facts to base your guesses on. Last year's record is simply that, last years record. And because of the fluidity of a college football team from year to year, every year, the previous year is not a valid predictor of the next. Unless you have spent hours and hours analyzing each and every team, which no on can do at this time of year ... because there is not a roster to analyze.
I'll add this, anyone who predicted the '12 Vols being less than 8-4 was simply being negative. The '11 defense was very, very good and there was little change in personnel. By the end of the 1st '12 game or two it was clear that the offense was clicking and the flaws in the D had not yet begun to appear. Therefor, put the rep of last year's D with shown perfromance of this years O, what do you have? 9-3 minimum. No one, and I mean no one, predicted the total collapse of our D. As a matter of fact, by the time the UF game rolled around many of the pros were predicting a Vol victory! Some pros were even predicting the Vols challenging in the SEC East! And then the collapse!
And OBTW, I still find it hard to understand how you could say 5-7 in '13 is a "good coaching job." You...do...not...even...know...who...is...on...the...team.
If you want to believe your mumbo jumbo, that's cool! I don't and I'm not stupid.
But I will stick with my goals for the '13 team, the same as Coach Jones'! CHAMPIONSHIPS! 14-0 baby, 14-0.

I hope you and Coach Jones are on target..if not next year then the next..if not that year then the next..I hope Coach Jones stops the revolving door..
Ihope we quit blowing off reruits by continuing to claim national championships we did not win. These young kids have something called the internet where they can see that Southern Cal won in 1967. We lost the Orange Bowl when we were ranked third. DanV
Take your red-neck arse back to watching rasslin ..UT football is what it is and it ain't going to get better by thinking it is something it ain''t or that our opponents are not better than they are..it is going to get better with better players and coaching and it's going to take time...I don't know who you mean when you say ..we..you got a mouse in your pocket..we also means UT fans with a brain..you sound like you would be better suited for the yellow brick road than out in public..
A well-stated short squelch to all these posters who, whenever someone counsels patience in view of UT's difficulties right now, comes back with a distorted view of what is "acceptable" in terms of wins and losses and the program's perception. Self-delusion among fans is part of what got us into this mess in the first place, by placing unrealistic expectations on the coaches and teams. It is all very well to have an ultimate lofty goal in mind, but you will never reach it if your myopia keeps causing you to stumble on the first step.

Unless one is talking about Oregon or a few imitators like UNC under Fedora, "up-tempo offense" is mostly a buzz word in terms of how fast a team plays. Mostly it just means a no-huddle offense that spends most of its time at the line of scrimmage to prevent the other team from substituting on defense. Looked at that way, more and more teams are playing such a system, at least at times. My main takeaway from what I have heard Jones say is that he will fit his offense to the players he has. He has certain preferences but he seems flexible enough to put together a system that will give him the best chance to win with a given set of players. We will see how his approach evolves as he recruits "his" type of players.
Ihope we quit blowing off reruits by continuing to claim national championships we did not win. These young kids have something called the internet where they can see that Southern Cal won in 1967. We lost the Orange Bowl when we were ranked third. DanV
Endlessly claiming every possible wire-service, cracker-barrel, popcorn poll championship in sight doesn't seem to be putting recruits off Alabama. Personally, I wouldn't claim that type of "championship", but the fact is that the top level of NCAA football has NEVER had a true champion in the way EVERY other NCAA sport has, so programs are free to claim any kind of championship they want, and UT is by NO means alone in this.

VOL1972 writes:

I think slugging an assistant coach on the sideline might be considered a good reason. That clip would have been played over and over if we had hired him. Fair or not.

Funny thing about UT and fresh starts, the more we keep making them, the more we go nowhere.
Let's hope our 4th coach in 6 years get us off the start block.

This was not a linear search where he only thought about one candidate at a time. In order to be put on the original list of potential coaches (about five) background information, including talking to previous players etc. was done. Geez, have you never conducted a hiring search?

GerryOP writes:
'Splain me to something? We know absolutely nothing about the '12 team. So how is it possible to predict any kind of record?
Oh, and being negative? Why is it that Coach Dooley bringing home 5-7 record got him fired, but if Jones brings home a 5-7 record it's "good coaching?" If 5-7 in '12 was negative why isn't 5-7 in '13 negative? Sounds like we could have kept Dooley and saved $17 mil.
underthehill writes:

GerryOP writes:
Peace my Vol brother ... peace.

It is all very well to have an ultimate lofty goal in mind, but you will never reach it if your myopia keeps causing you to stumble on the first step.
johnlg00 writes:
Unless one is talking about Oregon or a few imitators like UNC under Fedora, "up-tempo offense" is mostly a buzz word in terms of how fast a team plays. Mostly it just means a no-huddle offense that spends most of its time at the line of scrimmage to prevent the other team from substituting on defense. Looked at that way, more and more teams are playing such a system, at least at times. My main takeaway from what I have heard Jones say is that he will fit his offense to the players he has. He has certain preferences but he seems flexible enough to put together a system that will give him the best chance to win with a given set of players. We will see how his approach evolves as he recruits "his" type of players.
johnlg00 writes:
Endlessly claiming every possible wire-service, cracker-barrel, popcorn poll championship in sight doesn't seem to be putting recruits off Alabama. Personally, I wouldn't claim that type of "championship", but the fact is that the top level of NCAA football has NEVER had a true champion in the way EVERY other NCAA sport has, so programs are free to claim any kind of championship they want, and UT is by NO means alone in this.
