Has anyone else noticed that Tyler Smith's game just looks different. Nothing smooth about his offensive moves. Doesn't appear to be a injury that we know of. He just doesn't have a rhythm to his game. Everything he does appears as though it's being done hard and uneven. Maybe I expected more.
Smith refuses to accept the reality that he is a complementary player (albeit a good one in the right situation). He is determined to get his shots and most of them are those circus shots that, at best, have a prayer of going in. If he would focus on the effort part of the game and let the shots come in the flow of the game, this would be a much better basketball team. Seemed to have an attitude problem at the start of this game but then went to work on the boards and his D was improved over the matador phooey we've seen far too often this year. Unfortunately, and predictably, he hit a spell in the second half where he thought that effort entitled him to more of those circus shots and ended up 4 of 14 (most shots on the team) and came close to taking away all the flow and momentum that we have seen so little of this year. Thankfully, he hit one (when he went straight up instead of trying the triple-pump dippity do) before he totally disrupted the flow of the game.
But, hey, a W is a W and maybe this bunch can string together a few more and go into the SEC tourney with some momentum (or they could just as easily think they figured it all out tonight and blow the rest of the season). I'm hoping for the former!
And, in the credit where credit is due department: 16 assists for the team, guys on he floor, Hopson looked like there may be hope after all, and the game plan did a good job of neutralizing State's strengths.
