Last year we saw Pearl work with a team trying to integrate 5 new players, only one of whom (Negedu) was ready to do the running necessary to play Pearl's style. Given the late-season depth issues we'd seen the previous two years, it wasn't too odd for Pearl to look to reduce the physical toll on the guys earlier in the season in order to keep from overwhelming the new guys. Obviously it didn't work, but it's not like it made no sense to try a different strategy in a new situation (recall that his first two teams were dominated by veterans).
