As for the Pell Grant discussion, I would just like to remind some of the oldsters on here that UT costs a HECKUVA lot more these days than when we went there. I was able to pay for my entire undergraduate degree with one minimum-wage--$1.25/hr--summer job and a part-time minimum-wage job over the Christmas break each year. That's tuition, books, fees, and spending money. Pretty sure no undergrad can do that these days. Of course, I was able to live at home, which no college athlete can do.

For another thing, there are restrictions on how much they can work, when they can work, and how much they can make, quite apart from the time demands of nearly year-round training and, oh yeah, school. So if, as is the case with lots of these kids, if their parents can't send them extra money, they can only sit in their dorm rooms while their teammates and classmates get the full college experience.
