Please forgive my ignorance... but why are we so gung ho over Jon Gruden? Sure he might bring an all star coaching staff, and maybe he brings a commanding presence... but at what cost? Fact: Jon Gruden was successful on the Pro level and won a Super Bowl. Ok, but does that guarentee success on the College level? And how soon before he would want to return to the Pro level? Fact: Jon Gruden would most likely bring an all-star coaching staff. Great.. but didn't Lane Kiffin already do that? Were we that much better with his staff? Fact: Jon Gruden is an Offensive and Quarterback guru / genius. But our offense is not broken? We average 36 points a game and over 450 yards per game. We would stand to lose an excellent OC in Chaney, a RB coach (Jay Graham) and Offensive Line Coach (Sam Pittman) that came in here and improved our running game tremendously since last year, and a QB Coach that recruits have said they love in Hinshaw. Fact: Gruden would command at least $5M and probably over $6M a year. Are there not other coaches interested in the UT Coaching position that would cost the university much less and be able to produce similar results. Hiring Gruden would not bring instant National Championships. Neither would hiring any other coach. So why not go with a Defensive minded coach that would command less money from UT and may agree to keep some or all of an Offensive coaching staff that has produced?
Anyway... with that in mind, here is my wish list for the next coach:
1. Charlie Strong. Charlie would command less money than my othr choices, and is considered to be popular among recruits and players. I'm thinking he would cost between $3M-4M per year... 2. Bob Stoops. Bob is proven n the college level to win. I don't think he has ny NC's, but h is great recruiter and he has several Conference Championships. He is not number 1 on my list solely because he would command $4-5M per year. 3. Jimbo Fisher. Jimbo is a good coach and an excellent recruiter. As I understand it, he's not too thrilled with his current coaching position and would seriously consider working for Hart again and helping Tennessee get back to the top 10 level. I am guessing we could get him for around $4M a year, which would be a slight raise in his current salary...
Is anybody else confused by all the Gruden-Mania running rampant? I want to win as much as anyone, but hiring Gruden does not make sense to me... :)
