I'd love to see UT go after Bob Stoops. Really go after him. Yes, he turned down UF twice. But why? Because he'd have to replace the Head Gator, Spurrier or Urban Meyer who won 2 BCS titles. No thanks. Nobody can live up to those expectations for long-I think it's one reason Spurrier left suddenly in January, 2002. Why Zook was fired mid-season. Why Meyer apologized for close wins by blaming the flu and eventually burned out.
What UT could offer Stoops is a program that has all the pieces except the head coach. The fans, facilities, and funds are all there. We're not much different than OU was in 1999 when Stoops landed in Norman. There's enough room here to write your own tradition and legacy here beside Neyland and Fulmer-or even above them if you can. Stoops would bring the Bill Snyder brand of football here (which seems a whole lot like Neyland's winning formula of football).
What Stoops did at OU was to embrace the Sooner Magic that previous coaches shied away from. He led that program out of the wilderness and to the top of the conference and the country.
I'd ask him how solid he thinks the Big XII is. Seriously-they're trying to maintain enough members to have a championship game. I'd remind him that the Longhorn Network is just the latest example of Texas' desire to take the whole pie for themselves. They've already destroyed 2 conferences and they'll do it again eventually. I'd ask him if he's not bored beating on Texas 64-3 every year. Oh, and you won't always have Mack Brown to kick around either. All that money will eventually turn the tables on you when Texas hires his replacement.
You can continue to be a big fish the Big XII-while it lasts. Or you could come over here, with far less pressure, and aim to be the big fish in the biggest pond, the SEC. Oh, and one more thing, Nick Saban isn't going to be around forever either. He'll either burn out or the fans will get unhappy with no championships-just like Florida.
