olster: You reached back over half a century to pull up Doug Atkins. I thought I was probably the only one on this site ancient enough to remember Doug.
Technically, you are probably correct that he was a walk on in Football. However, he came to U.T. on a basketball scholarship. The General, noticing his size & agility, just plain stole him from the basketball coach.
I believe he also won the Southeastern Conference high jump title while at UT.
