Speaking of older days and how persona can be misleading: the best HS player I ever lined up against was a fellow named EJ Junior, or Maplewood. They ran a 6-1 D, and he made every play. Never ran his mouth, not flashy or trashy.
I don't know his honors, but he went on to Bama and the Cardinals and did pretty well at at both places.
