The defenders of slap hitting claim the distance is so short from home to first base, you have to. The problem is getting to second base. If the lead off slaps and gets on first and the next hitter slaps, it is usually an easy force out at second. I hate it because it is such a defensive play. You are giving up outs. My feeling is the fences are so short you are cheating yourself if you don't get the ball in the air. The greatest space on a softball field is between the outfielders. You get 21 outs in a game. Don't give the other team any freebies.
