The principle of verticality in the rules extends from the floor to the ceiling. As long as the defender is in a "legal guarding position", which includes jumping straight up, any contact initiated by offensive player is an offensive foul if it is anything, but they almost never have the guts to call it right.

I thought the replay clearly showed the ref got it right..
