First, this wasn't an 'uphill' battle until the end of the game. The Lady Vols led 13-2 and were up by 7 midway through the second half. Second, if you watched the game, you'd have seen a well reffed game for women's basketball. There was one charge on Ariel that was pretty sad, but you'd have to be simply a 'homer' to think the game was overly influenced by the refs.
Reread the quotes from Cierra and Holly. Does anyone think the same would have been said had the Lady Tiger hit the free throws that would have, for practical purposes, ended the game, or if the 3 point shot with .8 seconds went in as it appeared it was going to. Almost nothing about basketball talent, skill or execution. As long as there's no attention given to those aspects of the game, the Lady Vols will continue as they have for the past 5 years...convincingly beating teams with little or no talent, squeaking by or losing to teams with half the talent, and always losing to those with equal or greater talent.
The Lady Vols really miss Izzy in the middle, but something needs to be done about a defense which constantly gives up open shots. It seems like any decent ball handler takes the ball to the basket at will. And again they gave up two layups by playing man to man defense on throw ins under their own basket. The effort is there; the techniques and execution are not.
OK, OK, enough criticism. They needed to win and they did. That's good. Hopefully, the rest will do everyone good, and reviewing film will lead to adjustments to resolve the defensive problems. They do watch film, right?
