Interesting and valid points on both sides. It is rather disturbing that we let the likes of John Adams set the agenda for our program. The "character" issue should affect behavior on our campus and not necessarily every moment of a teenager's life, up to this point. If we expect to win in the SEC, we must cast a wide enough net to capture some talent; as with fishing, there is the risk of some throwbacks. Fans on this site always compare out coaching and talent with Alabama; review the story about the hoods recently having a little too much fun. We cannot have it both ways: recruit only choir boys or win some games. Having "character" on a team means weeding out the bad ones, not avoiding a chance to change the life of a potential good one. A good coaching staff can strike that balance; Adams is an unrealistic choice to write the rules on this issue. He commits literary felony most every day.
