So far, so good for me about how Butch seems to know how and when to offer the carrot and when to use the stick. A good coach doesn't treat everyone the SAME, he treats everyone FAIRLY. Sometimes a player needs a pat on the back and sometimes he needs a kick in the butt.
I agree with the poster who was concerned about the 98-yard run. The ONE thing most of us hope for this year is that the defense can at least stop giving up big plays. It seems clear that the defense was initially fooled, but a wrong alignment or step shouldn't completely take the defense out of the play. Now, I know Neal is fast, but there are LOTS of fast guys on UT's schedule.
As for the way the offense plowed down the field with the running game, we know for one thing that the O-line certainly SHOULD be among the best in the country, so the defense might be pretty good--they are just being dominated by a superior offense.
For another thing, we know that the defensive line has had a rash of injuries. Not only is the defensive depth hurt, the ones still out there may be playing tentatively at times out of the fear of injury, even though we know that that CAUSES injury as often as not. The uncertainty resulting from an "injury outbreak" is something this team does NOT need while it is still in the process of getting its football mind right.
