Among other things, he wanted to energize the Vols fan base, get under the collective skin of rival coaches and recruit UT's next great quarterback — not necessarily in that order.

No new street signs are on order. It was the year that saw a football coaching legend get a pink slip, two basketball teams excused early from the NCAA tournament and a baseball program remain in SEC oblivion. Certainly, there were highlights, none more so than the Lady Vols national title in indoor track and field.

</title><link>http://govolsxtra.com/news/2009/jun/15/sec-coaches-will-do-well-at-other-jobs/?partner=RSS</link><description>Becoming a college football coach at an SEC school is tantamount to hitting the lottery. You're basically set for life.
But suppose there was no football team to coach. How do you think the group of SEC coaches would fare on the open market in a brutal economy?
My guess: They would do just fine. In fact, I could see them functioning successfully in a number of other jobs.

</title><link>http://govolsxtra.com/news/2009/jun/13/textbook-football-costs-tide-win-over-ut/?partner=RSS</link><description>Hey, Tennessee football fan, feel any better now?
If I were composing a list of the 10 most gut-wrenching defeats of the Phillip Fulmer era, the 6-3 loss at Alabama in 2005 would be on there somewhere.
It's gone now. Wiped off the books.
Vacated is the proper term in NCAA lingo.

</title><link>http://govolsxtra.com/news/2009/jun/13/mattingly-swamp-rat-still-never-loss-words/?partner=RSS</link><description>About a year ago, I went to Chattanooga to meet posters on one of the “chat boards” so prevalent on the Internet. It was a chance to see the faces behind the names of those guys who freely proffer their opinions on any number of subjects, mostly the ebbs and flows of Tennessee football. When I arrived, there was someone there I didn’t expect, but someone I was glad to see. He had already commandeered the podium and showed no signs of letting go.
