Practice Report: August 8
Where: Lindsay Nelson Field
Gear: Shorts and helmets
Play of the Day: Freshman quarterback Brent Schaeffer hit junior wide receiver Chris Hannon 45 yards downfield after Hannon beat junior cornerback Jason Allen, UTs best defensive back.
QB Stats: For the 7-on-7 drill, senior C.J. Leak completed two of four passes for 19 yards with a key 40-yard touchdown pass dropped by senior wideout Tony Brown. Junior Rick Clausen was three of seven for 49 yards. Freshman Brent Schaeffer completed three of four passes for 52 yards including a 40-yard touchdown to C.J. Fayton. Schaeffer continued to have fumbling problems. The Florida native had two fumbles today. That makes five in the first two days. Freshman Erik Ainge completed one of three passes with one would be pass reception dropped.
Big Vick: 310-pound senior tight end Victor McClure caught two passes. Fulmer said he was impressed McClure whose main duty is to block. Fulmer said most of the patterns McClure were running were used for former Vol Jason Witten and will be used for freshman Brad Cottam when he is ready to contribute.
Tough Guy Award: Strength and conditioning coach Johnny Long was at his usual practice post despite spending Sunday morning in the emergency room. Longs left knee required six stitches to close a gash caused by a chain saw accident.
Mr. Punctuality: Junior offensive tackle Albert Toeaina was the first projected starter to arrive at practice. Toeaina, who lost 30 pounds in the off-season, looks intent on making a major impact this season after transferring from junior college.
Vol Notes: Freshman JaKouri Williams spent some time at wide receiver. Mostly, the Louisiana native has worked at tailback. His explosiveness has been impressive. Senior wideout Derrick Tinsley had at least two dropped passes during practice.
Fulmers Thoughts: Fulmer said there was a battle at right offensive tackle between juniors Albert Toeaina and Cody Douglas. Toeaina has taken most of the first team snaps. Fulmer also said he expected a highly contested battle at left guard between sophomores Aaron Sears and Rob Smith.
Visitors: Vol commitment Jonathan Crompton was in attendance. The Waynesville, N.C., quarterback has visited Knoxville several times this summer. This was his first since committing to play football at UT in June. He plans to sign a football scholarship in February as part of the 2005 class. Dustin and Britton Colquitts parents, Craig and Ann, were present to see both sons boom several punts apiece. Sophomore kicker James Wilhoits parents, Gary and Debbie, were also looking on.
Looking Ahead: UT will don shoulder pads for the first time Monday and Tuesday. Practice with full pads will commence Wednesday. The Vols first scrimmage is Saturday.
