Practice report for Aug. 7
- When: Saturday afternoon
- Where: Lindsey Nelson Stadium
- Weather: Sunny, mild
- Gear: Helmets and shorts
- Oops: UTs offense displayed a lack of consistency one would
expect on the first day of practice ... Freshman QB Brent
Schaeffer looked shaky with at least three fumbles, a slip and he was sacked twice ... Freshman quarterback Erik Ainges first interception as a Vol was caught by freshman defensive back Ryan Karl, who happens to be Ainges roommate ... senior quarterback C.J. Leak just overthrew what would have been the play of the day when Robert Meachem beat Jason Allen downfield.
- Rumble: After a downfield hit, sophomore cornerback Jonathan Wade
got into a short-lived skirmish with sophomore wide receiver Jayson
Swain ... As the day wore on, tempers seemed close to flaring up but
the players avoided any altercations
.
- Up Front: UT was consistent with its first-teamoffensive line. Albert Toeaina lined up at right tackle with Cody Douglas at right guard, Jason Respert at center, Rob Smith at left guard, andMichaelMunoz at left tackle.
- MIA: Junior wide receiver Jomo Fagan was wearing a boot on his left foot. Fagan has a stress fracture and is out for 2-3 weeks ... Sophomore cornerback Antwan Stewart didnt let his torn ACL injury keep him from participating. Stewart was on the sideline throughout practice cheering on his teammates. He is expected to return from the spring injury late this season.
- Double Duty: Junior James Banks split time between safety and wide receiver. Most of his time was on defense. Banks is suspended for the first three games of this season.
- Consistent Trooper: Running backs coach Trooper Taylor demanded his unit run the distance of the practice field after breaking through the offensive line. Taylor introduced the concept during spring practice.
- Looking Ahead: The Vols will practice Sunday in helmets and shorts. Monday and Tuesday theyll work in shorts and shoulder pads. Full pads and full contact are scheduled for Wednesday.
