Daily Practice Report: August 9
Where: Lindsey Nelson Field
Gear: Helmets and shorts
Play of the Day: Freshman quarterback Erik Ainge looked like a polished veteran when he found freshman wideout Robert Meachem 40 yards downfield for a touchdown. Ainge looked to his left then fired a bullet back to his right. Meachem dove and pulled in a one-handed pass after beating talented freshman Jonathan Hefney on the vertical route.
MVP: Meachem was nearly impossible for UTs defensive backs to cover Monday. The Oklahoman caught seven passes. Three required him to leap or dive to complete the play.
QB Watch: Phillip Fulmer said the timing between the quarterbacks and wide receivers improved Monday. For the most part, that was evident. Senior C.J. Leak was consistent and strong-armed. Junior Rick Clausen was average and missed some open receivers. Freshman Brent Schaeffer showed off his arm strength by repeatedly firing the ball between defenders and completing passes. Erik Ainge made several plays and avoided any obvious mistakes.
Physical: The first fracas of the season involved junior wide receiver Chris Hannon and senior linebacker Kevin Burnett. The two traded blows before teammates could separate them. When asked who won the scuffle, Burnett said, "Who do you think?"Sophomore fullback Cory Anderson introduced his new 270-pound physique to sophomore safety Corey Campbell. Anderson lowered his shoulder and hammered Campbell as he tried to force the former Austin East star out of bounds.
The Futures so Bright: Clausen will decide within a week if he
will intends to wear a shaded visor on his helmet. Clausen has worn the
visor throughout practice. The NCAA forbids the use of such a visor
unless there is a medical reason for doing so.
UT would have to appeal to the NCAA for Clausen to wear the device. So
far, UTs training staff said Clausen likes the visor.
MIA: Junior Defensive tackle Greg Jones did not practice Monday. Jones is awaiting a decision on an academic appeal. Fulmer said Jones will redshirt this season.
Looking Ahead: UT will practice in shorts and shoulder pads Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday the Vols will don full pads and hold two practice sessions. Because of scheduling and NCAA rules, UT has only scheduled two two-a-day practice sessions.
