Daily report: August 13

When: Friday afternoon.

Where: Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Gear: Full pads through the first eight periods (roughly half the practice), shoulder pads off the second half of practice.

Weather: Warm and sunny.

No QB: UT coach Phillip Fulmer reiterated the Vols don’t have a starting quarterback heading into Saturday’s scrimmage.

"It’s a very big day for the quarterbacks; we’ve said all along it’ll be a competitive situation,’’ he said. "C.J. (Leak) needs to..do things naturally; throw the ball on time, manage the game effectively and make good decisions.’’

Fulmer said he’ll give the freshmen QBs, Brent Schaeffer and Erik Ainge, as many looks as possible today.

"They’ve been very good about having poise and pretty good about decision making,’’ he said. "I’m very pleased with where they are at this point.

"No question, physically they can play.’’

Hurricane Vols: Receiver Chris Hannon and tight end Justin Reed are worried about family in Florida.

Hannon’s from Sarasota, and Reed’s from Punta Gorda, both cities hit by Hurricane Charley.

"My brothers said they were going to stick it out,’’ Hannon said.

Likewise for Reed’s family.

"We’re at the highest point in the county, about 16 feet above sea level,’’ Reed said. "They boarded up the windows and got the generators ready.’’

Late Surge: The defense got the better of the offense during the first part of the 9-on-8 run scrimmage, but the offense recovered and won the second half.

Tough Trooper: Running backs coach Trooper Taylor was riding his players hard Friday. Taylor yelled at Gerald Riggs for not running a play out to the end zone, threw fumbles on the ground for Cedric Houston to fall on after he dropped a handoff and made David Holbert do down-ups after the freshman fullback missed an assignment.

Injury update: Kevin Simon (ribs) and David Yancey (family issue) returned to practice Friday. Vols still sidelined: Receiver Bret Smith (foot), receiver Bill Grimes (back), defensive tackle Greg Jones (academics), tight end Victor McClure (shoulder), linebacker Marvin Mitchell (knee).

X-rays on defensive end Jared Hostetter’s ankle were negative. He’s out at lest two weeks with a sprain.

The Future: Fulmer said the Vols have inserted all of their offense.

"One of the things to determine what we look like is where we go with the quarterback,’’ Fulmer said, "So (the scrimmage) is very important.’’
