Daily Report: August 14
* Where: Haslam Field.
* Gear: Full pads.
* Weather: Warm and sunny.
* Scrimmage: The Vols ran a 90-play closed scrimmage in front of 200 spectators.
Admission was free, which was good, or those in attendance would have asked for a refund.
Tennessee's offense committed five turnovers and the defensive front seven dominated play.
The only scoring play of the day came when freshman Brent Schaeffer connected with Robert Meachem on a 65-yard TD pass. Schaeffer, however, also threw two interceptions.
C.J. Leak, No. 1 on the depth chart, was a pedestrian 1-of-4 passing and got just eight snaps.
* Hurricane Vol: Tight end Justin Reed said his parents elected to ride out Hurricane Charley Friday from their home in Punta Gorda, Fla.
The Hurricane's eye passed directly over the town of 15,000, blowing away all of the town's traffic lights.
"Our roof was half blown off, our pool cage was gone and the garage door was blown in,'' Reed said. "They're all right, but they said it was the scariest thing in their life.''
* Injury Update: Starting lineman Cody Douglas will be out an undetermined amount of time after suffering what appeared to be a high sprain to his left ankle. Douglas may be UT's most valuable lineman; he's the second-most experienced behind Michael Munoz, and he can play guard or tackle.
* Green Jersey: The only green non-contact jersey of the day belonged to oft-injured Derrick Tinsley, who ran into a fence and injured his foot in Wednesday's practice.
A handful of players were held out of the scrimmage with injuries, but the only projected starter in the group was tight end Victor McClure (shoulder).
Where's Woody?: New assistant Trooper Taylor might want to spend less time singing Rocky Top and more time coaching. Taylor's running backs fumbled twice, dropped passes, and according to UT offensive coordinator Randy Sanders, made mistakes in protection that led to sacks.
