UT notebook: August 20
* Where: Haslam Field.
* Gear: Full pads
* Weather: Hot, hazy and humid.
* Orange Curtain: With practices now closed to the media after the first 30 minutes, there is little information available on exactly what the Vols are working on.
Crowd noise was piped over Haslam Field near the end of practice, indicating there was some scrimmage action, albeit, more than likely non-contact.
UT coach Phillip Fulmer will not tip his hand as to whether he's working on a two-quarterback system with Erik Ainge and Brent Schaeffer, as many suspect, or whether he's aiming to find one quarterback to get the majority of repetitions come game time.
"My aiming point is Saturday's (today's) scrimmage,'' Fulmer said. "I just want us to get through that.''
Fulmer said he has scheduled "70 or 80'' plays for today's scrimmage, but only 24 situational plays for the first team. Originally, scrimmages were also planned for Tuesday and Thursday, but with the rash of bumps and bruises, Fulmer said he wants to be careful not to get any more players beat up or injured.
"We have to get some people well,'' he said.
* Green Jerseys: Quarterbacks Brent Schaeffer, Erik Ainge, Rick Clausen and Bo Hardegree were in green "no-contact'' jerseys Friday, and they figure to be in green jerseys the remainder of fall drills.
Asked when the "Brent Schaeffer Show'' would be on display again, Fulmer replied, "September 5.''
* Injury update: Others wearing green jerseys Friday were fullback Cory Anderson (knee bruise) and tight end Brad Cottam (shoulder).
End Karlton Neal (flu), receiver Robert Meachem (knee bruise), linebacker Robert Ayers (shoulder), offensive tackle Albert Toeaina (knee bruise) and offensive lineman Cody Douglas (ankle) were also held out of practice.
* Hold That Line: Fulmer said he's pleased with the play of defensive tackles Tony McDaniel, Justin Harrell and Jesse Mahelona, but he wants to see more from LaRon Harris, Ell Ash and Anthony Parker in today's scrimmage before deciding how the playing rotation will shake out at that position.
* Secondary Concerns: Fulmer said he's anxious to see separation at cornerback and safety, where a number of young players are working to unseat returning lettermen. True freshman Jonathan Hefney and redshirt freshman Roshaun Fellows continue to push sophomore Jonathan Wade at one corner, and Brandon Johnson and Jarod Parish are battling for the strong safety job.
* For Kicks: Fulmer said more situational work will be given to special teams in the scrimmage. The return duties remain in the air with the following players being considered: Hefney, Wade, Meachem, Corey Larkins, Chris Hannon, Ja'Kouri Williams and Jayson Swain.
