Practice Report: August 21
Schaeffer, who started the scrimmage, was 14 of 22 for 196 yards. Ainge was also sharp completing 12 of 19 for 144 yards. Junior Rick Clausen was 3 of 11 for 49 yards. C. J. Leak did not take snaps at quarterback. He had limited time at safety. Asked what he thought of the freshmen quarterbacks game management skills, Fulmer said, "I think they managed it pretty well today?I wasnt disappointed."
Fulmer would not comment on the possibility of playing two quarterbacks in the September 5 season opener versus UNLV.
Tailback Battle: Running back coach Trooper Taylor said if he had to pick a starting tailback immediately, it would be junior Gerald Riggs or senior Corey Larkins.
Taylor said he expects Knoxville native Corey Anderson to start at fullback. Taylor said Anderson is playing a more physical game as he continues to learn the offense.
Freshman Arian Foster rushed for 51 yards on seven carries. Senior Cedric Houston carried the ball six times for 26 yards. Jabari Davis had three carries for 11 yards. Riggs had 8 yards on two attempts. Corey Larkins had 2 yards on five attempts.
D Notes: Despite a day where the offense ruled, several young Vols turned in some nice defensive plays. Freshmen linebacker James Turner and defensive end Xavier Mitchell both posted a sack. Freshman "Inky" Johnson had an interception. The defense appeared to take the slow day personally. Senior linebacker Kevin Burnett was called for personal foul after an altercation with Anderson.
Simulation: UTs coaches kept to the sideline for most of the scrimmage to simulate game-like situations. That was a good thing for Fulmer who pulled a hamstring muscle on Friday.
MIA: Fulmer said junior James Banks did not practice Saturday because he was late to a meeting. The Indiana star is suspended for the first three games of the season.
Several other players were held out of the Saturday scrimmage for minor injuries: junior offensive tackle Albert Toeaina, freshman linebacker Robert Ayers, and freshman Brad Cottam.
Looking Ahead: Fulmer said that his staff could decide against holding a previously scheduled scrimmage on Tuesday night because of injury concerns. The Vols will take Sunday off and reconvene Monday.
