Daily Report: August 24

Schaeffer Starting: Freshman QB Brent Schaeffer began work with the first team. He was the only quarterback to receive work during the "media allowed" portion of practice. Schaeffer completed three of seven passes for 53 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

The most notable play during the "media allowed" portion of practice was a Schaeffer interception that sophomore CB Jonathan Wade returned 36 yards for a touchdown.

Schaeffer completed a bullet pass to senior WR Tony Brown. Brown spun and outran Vol defenders 30 yards to the end zone.

Schaeffer had three runs for 19 yards including one scamper that ended by being slammed to the turf by junior LB Kevin Simon. Later in the period, Schaeffer’s mobility was on display again as he rolled out of the pocket and avoided a sure sack from Vol linemen Justin Harrell and Jesse Mahelona.

Back Battle: RB coach Trooper Taylor’s weekend assessment of his group fit the bill Tuesday. Junior Gerald Riggs and senior Corey Larkins received the bulk of the early snaps. Taylor said Saturday that if he was forced to name a starter immediately then it would be between Riggs and Larkins.

Peyton Poise: Head coach Phillip Fulmer said, since 1992, Peyton Manning is the only quarterback to show more poise as a freshman than quarterbacks Schaeffer and Erik Ainge.

MIA: Senior OL Michael Munoz was held out of Tuesday’s practice. Fulmer said he had a sore knee but was fine. Sophomore Arron Sears took Munoz’s usual left tackle spot. Junior Albert Toeaina lined up at right tackle where he is battling Sears for playing time. Fulmer said at least 12 players would have been held out of practice if the Vols had conducted a full-scale scrimmage. The Vols held a heavy contact "thud" practice instead where offensive players are not taken to the ground.

Rebel Ready: Tuesday’s scrimmage had the feel of a game week practice. Special teams units donned red jerseys to simulate UNLV. Assistant coaches filled their skybox perch in order to simulate a game environment. Fulmer said UT’s coaching staff would begin introducing UNLV’s plays Wednesday.

Upstairs: Offensive coordinator Randy Sanders moved to the press box for Tuesday’s scrimmage. Sanders spent last season calling plays on the sideline. Fulmer said he asked Sanders to try out his old perch. Sanders said he would continue to evaluate where he would line up on game days.

Safety Plays: Junior S James Banks made a spectacular one-handed interception during Tuesday’s practice. Ironically, his former quarterback mate, C.J. Leak, was able to lay a big block downfield to spring Banks open on the return.

Junior Jason Allen said he has seen approximately 25% of his snaps from safety this fall. The rest have come at his preferred position, cornerback.

Just Joshin: Senior LB Kevin Burnett and freshman DB RoShaun Fellows exchanged jerseys before practice. Burnett said he will be wearing his usual "2" Wednesday instead of Fellows "36".

Looking Ahead: The Vols will hold a one-hour practice Wednesday afternoon. Don’t expect the remainder of fall drills to be very physical as UT tries to get healthy and prepare for UNLV.
