Daily Report for Aug. 25

* Where: Neyland-Thompson indoor field.

* When: Wednesday afternoon.

* How Long: Forty minutes. It was open to the media the entire time.

* Gear: Shorts, jerseys, helmets.

* Weather: Just as practice was set to begin on Haslam Field, thunder rumbled in the distance, dark clouds blew in and it began sprinkling so the workout was moved indoors.

* Quarterbacks: Freshman Brent Schaeffer worked mostly with the No. 1 offensive line. Freshman Erik Ainge worked mostly with the No. 2 unit.

* Fulmer Recap: Among his post-practice comments, Fulmer said the Vols got "an introduction" to UNLV, the season's opening opponent.

* Captain Returns: Starting left tackle Michael Munoz was back at practice after being held out of Tuesday's workout because of soreness in his knee. Munoz said after practice that he is fine and that he will continue to be monitored to get "quality reps."

* For The Defense: Defensive coordinator John Chavis said he has been encouraged by the play of safeties Brandon Johnson and Corey Campbell this week. Chavis also said he is feeling ''more and more comfortable" with Robert Boulware

* Offensive Line: Working with the first unit were Munoz, Rob Smith at left guard, Respert at center, Cody Douglas at right guard and Arron Sears at right tackle. Fulmer said the line is as deep as he can ever remember. He praised junior-college transfer Albert Toeaina and said he had "a great scrimmage" Tuesday He also said backup linemen David Ligon, Richie Gandy and Chuck Prugh are not far behind the starters.

* Overtime: Schaeffer stayed after practice to work some on his own.

* Medical Report: Linebacker Marvin Mitchell underwent knee surgery and faces six months of recovery, Fulmer said.

* Looking Ahead: A kicking workout is scheduled Saturday morning.
