Williams chooses Penn State over Sooners, Gators

Derrick Williams was a tough prospect to predict all recruiting season. Nothing changed Wednesday.

The 6-foot, 190-pound wide receiver from Greenbelt, Md., picked Penn State to conclude a highly contested recruiting battle. Williams was thought to be leaning to Oklahoma or Florida over the past week. Tennessee and Texas were also in contention.

"I'm going to the University of Penn State," Williams said on ESPN News as he donned a Nittany Lion cap. "When I was looking at all the schools, there were four things that I was looking for. I was looking for honesty, loyalty, a person that was trustworthy, and a man that had character. Joe Paterno had all that."

The recruiting coup is a big one for Paterno who turns 75 this month.

"Some people say there might be a chance that he could lose his job or retire, but that whole state is Joe Paterno's state," Williams said. "I really encourage every other recruit to come to Penn State with me and help this team to national championship.

"If Joe was going to leave, I would stay and work hard. I'm going to give everything to Penn State because they gave everything to me."
