The Smyrna High School cornerback, who turned 18 on Tuesday, took a step toward making his wish come true when he committed to the Vols last weekend.
"Tennessee's my all-time favorite team," Johnson said. "Why wait when you can play for the team you've always rooted for?
"When I pulled up to the stadium I thought, 'Who wouldn't want to play here with 107,000 fans.' This is where I want to play."
Johnson said the opportunity for immediate playing time was also a factor in his decision. Tennessee's track team was another factor. Johnson runs the 100, 200, and 400. He said his best times are 10.4, 21.8, and 50.0, respectively. Johnson said plans to run track for the Vols.
Johnson's coach at Smyrna, Philip Shadowens, said he expects Johnson to play cornerback. Shadowens said returning kicks is also a possibility.
"He's a big-time playmaker," Shadowens said. "He has unbelievable speed to go the distance. He has been a real shut-down corner for us."
In addition to playing cornerback the last two seasons, Shadowens said Johnson (5'9", 170) played wide receiver as a sophomore. Last season, Johnson played tailback and rushed for more than 1,400 yards.
Johnson said he considered Florida State, Ohio State, Wake Forest, and several SEC schools. He said he isn't sure if he will take any official visits this fall.
Homegrown: The state of Tennessee's 2005 class is one of the best in recent memory. At least five players have drawn serious interest from the Vols. That number could grow. UT could offer scholarships to 10 players once evaluations are complete.
Coker Update: UT's first commitment of the 2005 class is contemplating his fall itinerary. Tailback LaMarcus Coker committed to Tennessee in December following his junior year. However, Coker said he might take a "couple" of official visits.
"Mom wants me to (take visits). I've got to do what mom says," Coker said. "I don't think they'll change my mind."
Coker visited Tennessee's football camp last weekend but didn't participate because of a pulled hamstring.
