As expected, quarterback Jonathan Crompton announced Friday at the Tuscola High School gym that he was committed to Tennessee.
The Tuscola rising senior made the announcement in front of a gathering of family, friends, teammates, and media. Onlookers cheered as Crompton made the announcement.
"I'm done (with the recruiting process)," Crompton said. "I'm a Vol.
"I wanted to go some place I felt comfortable. Tennessee feels like a second family to me. It's so awesome to say I'm going to play at Tennessee. Not many people get to experience this."
Crompton said he was drawn to Tennessee's coaching staff after last year's Georgia game. The Vols lost 41-14. Crompton said he was impressed with how the coaching staff handled the disappointment.
Now, Crompton the prospect turns into Crompton the recruiter.
"I'm going to do my best to get the best in the country," Crompton said. "I want to win championships"
Crompton said he would focus on wide-receiver prospects initially. He said he has already talked to three wide out prospects: Patrick Turner from Nashville, Mohamed Massaquoi from Charlotte, N.C., and Josh Briscoe from Lawndale, N.C.
"I'm going to do my best to get two or three of them," Crompton said.
Crompton has met several Tennessee prospects at summer football camps. However, phone calls are how he does most of his recruiting.
"He's as big a recruiter as Coach (Philip) Fulmer," Turner said jokingly. "They need to hire him.
"I know what type of player he is. To know he would be in my class, that would be cool."
Crompton will have tough job convincing Massaquoi to commit to Tennessee. The Independence High wideout said he is leaning toward committing to Georgia over the Vols and Virginia. Massaquoi seems intent to follow his teammate, quarterback Joe Cox, who committed to the Bulldogs earlier.
Crompton confirmed that he selected June 25 for his announcement because it was the 53rd birthday of Tennessee assistant coach Dan Brooks. Brooks is Crompton's primary recruiter.
Crompton is the Vols third commitment. He follows Smyrna cornerback Marsalous Johnson and Antioch tailback LaMarcus Coker.
