QB-less Vols face a soft spot in SEC road
The Commodores are giving up 412.6 yards a game. The Wildcats are allowing 414.7 yards a game.
Based on those statistics and recent history, UT won't need many points. The Vols have shut out Vanderbilt three consecutive games and held Kentucky to a total of seven points in their past two games.
Also, UT's running game, which has been erratic this season, should be able to take the pressure off Rick Clausen, who was UT's third-string quarterback before Brent Schaeffer and Erik Ainge were injured in back-to-back games. The Commodores rank 11th in the SEC in run defense, and the Wildcats are last, giving up 233.4 yards a game.
Quarterback Confusion: Ten weeks into the football season, LSU's quarterback situation is as confusing as ever.
How confusing? The starting quarterback doesn't start.
Although freshman JaMarcus Russell started against Vanderbilt, LSU coach Nick Saban said he considered senior Marcus Randall to be his starter. His "starter" isn't expected to start again Saturday against Alabama but will play most of the game.
"For whatever reason, (Randall) has played well when he comes off the bench," Saban told the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate.
"I know a lot of people say we've never resolved the situation. It's not that we've never resolved it; it's never resolved itself. I think the participants have to resolve that in terms of how they play and the consistency with which they play."
Got that?
Cutler Out: Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler suffered an ankle injury on the opening drive against Florida on Saturday and didn't return to the game.
Steven Bright, a sophomore from Greer, S.C., passed for 118 yards and rushed for 77 in the 34-17 loss. Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson said he didn't know the extent of Cutler's injury but that Cutler could have returned if Bright had been injured.
Who's At Linebacker?: Florida had to defend Vanderbilt's option without its three starting linebackers - Channing Crowder, Travis Harris and Earl Everett - who missed the game with injuries.
Florida replaced them with Brandon Siler, Cory Bailey and Alvin Butler. Siler is a true freshman, Bailey is a senior strong safety who was moved to linebacker last Monday, and Butler is a redshirt freshman walk-on with no college playing experience prior to Saturday.
Rebels' Defense Hurting: Ole Miss' defensive line is wearing thin down the stretch.
Defensive end Jayme Mitchell is out indefinitely after suffering a fractured left foot against Auburn. Defensive tackle Andrew Wicker recently underwent knee surgery and is out for the season.
Ole Miss needs to win its final three games to become bowl eligible for the eighth consecutive season.
Keeping It Close: Auburn vs. Georgia isn't just the oldest rivalry in the SEC; it's one of the closest. Auburn has won 51 times, Georgia has won 48, and there have been eight ties.
Five of their past six games at Auburn have been decided by seven points or less, and three of their past five games at Auburn have been tied after regulation play. The 1994 game ended 23-all, Georgia won 56-49 in four overtimes in 1996 and Auburn won 29-26 in overtime in 2000.
Top 25: My AP ballot looked like this: 1. Southern California, 2. Oklahoma, 3. Auburn, 4. California, 5. Utah, 6. Wisconsin, 7. Texas, 8. Georgia, 9. Michigan, 10. Louisville, 11. Boise State, 12. Tennessee, 13. Miami, 14. Florida State, 15. Arizona State, 16. Virginia, 17. Virginia Tech, 18. West Virginia, 19. LSU, 20. Iowa, 21. Texas A&M, 22. Oklahoma State, 23. Boston College, 24. Notre Dame, 25. UTEP.
