EA Sports simulation: Auburn vs. Georgia

In a game that held national championship and BCS implications for a number of teams, the #3 Auburn Tigers kept their undefeated season alive with a 24-16 victory over the #8 Georgia Bulldogs in our EA Sports simulation.

The Auburn defense, overshadowed most of the year by the Tiger offense, shined in this game, forcing fumbles by Georgia freshman running backs Danny Ware and Thomas Brown in the contest. The Auburn offense turned those two turnovers into 14 points on the strength of two TD runs by Carnell "Cadillac" Williams in the first half. The Tigers offense used the running of Williams to set up their short passing game, which kept Georgia's defense guessing throughout the game.

The Georgia offense, which had been impressive in the Bulldogs' 62-17 defeat of Kentucky last week, had difficulty getting untracked for most of the game. QB David Greene, who became the winningest quarterback in I-A history the week before, was blitzed by the Auburn defense constantly, getting sacked three times by defensive end Stanley McGlover in the game. Greene also saw his SEC record for consecutive passes without an interception end when he threw a pick to CB Carlos Rogers late in the second quarter.

The two teams traded scores in the first half, with the Tigers scoring touchdowns while the Bulldogs were forced to settle on field goals when their drives stalled within the Auburn red zone. Capitalizing on the turnovers by Georgia's freshmen running backs, the Tigers were able to take a 17-6 lead into the half.

In the second half, Auburn's was able to only put 7 points on the board, but their ball control offense gave the Bulldogs little opportunity for sustained drives. After holding the Tigers on their first possession of the second half, the Bulldogs were again able to move the ball deep into Auburn territory, but had to settle for another Andy Bailey field goal to bring the score to 17-9. On their ensuing drive, Auburn used a 18 play, 81 yard drive to carve nearly 12 minutes off the clock, capping the drive with a TD pass from Jason Campbell to TE Cooper Wallace in the fourth quarter to bring the score to 24-9. Georgia went three and out on their next possession and after another sustained drive by Auburn took time off the clock without points on the board, the Bulldogs managed to score their first and only touchdown of the game, a 12 yard TD pass from David Greene to Reggie Brown with under 2 minutes to go. The ensuing on-side kick was recovered by the Tigers, who took a knee to run out the clock from there and keeping their hopes for a perfect season alive.

The Bulldogs will next take the field on November 27th when they host ACC rival Georgia Tech in Athens. Auburn's next contest will be November 20th, when they head to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama in this year's Iron Bowl.
