Adams: Auburn romps, makes case to move up
The Georgia Bulldogs fans had long since been quieted by the unbeaten Auburn Tigers, who looked like a championship team in a surprisingly easy 24-6 victory over eighth-ranked Georgia. They can only hope that all top-25 voters were as impressed as Georgia coach Mark Richt.
"They've been in the top two for awhile with me," said Richt, who has a vote in the coaches poll. "If they keep winning, I think they should be in the championship game."
Third-ranked Auburn couldn't have done much more to impress the voters, who have the Tigers behind No. 1 Southern California and No. 2 Oklahoma in both polls. Auburn piled up 404 yards against the nation's 14th-ranked defense and shut out the Bulldogs until the last three minutes of the game.
"We were out-coached and out-executed," Richt said. "Auburn has done well all year and no one has really challenged them. I was hoping we could do that.
"We gave them no resistance. They just beat us."
And it didn't take long.
Auburn took the lead on an eight-play, 80-yard touchdown drive on its first possession; added a second-quarter touchdown on a 29-yard pass from Williams to Anthony Mix and put the game out of reach with a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jason Campbell to running back Ronnie Brown in the first minute of the fourth quarter.
"As I told the players, I haven't seen a complete game like this offensively, defensively and the kicking game all at once," Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville said. "It was fun to watch."
No one seemed to be having more fun than Williams, who played a game worthy of the Heisman Trophy for which Auburn is touting him. He rushed for 101 yards on 19 carries, had 40- and 28-yard punt returns and caught four passes. But he smiled the biggest when he talked about the pass he threw.
"He was more excited about that play than any play in four years," Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell said.
Williams ran to his right, drew in the fast-closing Georgia defense and threw a strike to Mix, who was at least 10 yards behind an unaware secondary. All-SEC safety Thomas Davis was rushing to the line of scrimmage in pursuit of Williams when Mix made the catch.
"When they called the play, I said, 'It's a touchdown,' " Williams said. "It's money in the bank."
Williams said he had completed the pass every time but once - "when it slipped out of my hand" - in practice.
Despite Williams' unexpected pass, Tuberville said, "This wasn't a game of big plays. It was a game of consistency."
That played to Auburn's strength. The Tigers have been amazingly consistent in winning nine of their 10 games by 21 or more points.
Campbell, who ranks third in the country in pass efficiency, completed 18 of 22 passes for 189 yards, ran twice for 16 yards and managed the offense with his usual aplomb.
"They came out and did bootlegs, options and a lot of different things," Georgia defensive end David Pollack said. "They didn't really put themselves in bad predicaments."
On those rare occasions when Auburn's defense found itself in a bad predicament, it invariably had a solution.
Georgia drove to Auburn's 19-yard line after receiving the opening kickoff, but the Tigers held their ground and forced a 36-yard field-goal attempt, which Andy Bailey missed badly.
The Bulldogs had another scoring opportunity in the second quarter after Pollack blocked Kody Bliss' punt. But on second down from the Auburn 25, cornerback Carlos Rogers didn't bite on a play-action fake and intercepted Greene's pass in the end zone.
"This was a game that everyone had been looking forward to," Auburn linebacker Travis Williams said. "We wanted to make a statement, and I think we did that."
They will find out today if the voters were listening.
