EA Sports simulation: Auburn vs. Alabama
The Auburn defense, which came up big against Georgia the week before, was ferocious in the face of the Alabama offense, forcing 4 turnovers in the contest. The Auburn offense, using the two headed running offense of Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown to accumulate over 260 yards of rushing, with Williams leading the Tigers with 154 yards and three TD's on 21 carries.
The Alabama offense, which came into the game looking to use Ken Darby to ease the pressure on QB Spencer Pennington, misfired early and often against the Auburn defense. Pennington, who after being pounded on 5 sacks by the middle of the third quarter, was replaced by Marc Guillon, who led the Tide on their longest drive of the day, resulting in their only offensive touchdown on a pass to Tyrone Prothro late in the 3rd quarter.
Stanley McGlover had another big game for the Auburn defense, recording two sacks and forcing a fumble by Darby on the Tide's first possession. Matt Campbell, whose offensive skills have been overshadowed by the War Eagle running attack, connected with Silas Daniel for a 25 yard TD pass to put the score at 7-0.
From that point, Auburn would go on to add 21 unanswered points, 14 on Cadillac Williams TD runs, against the overmatched Tide, stunning the Alabama home crowd and taking a 28-0 lead into the half at Tuscaloosa.
The partisan crowd stirred early in the second half, when Alabama was able to put their first points on the board. Taking the second half kickoff, the Tigers drove the ball to the Alabama 15 before Campbell was picked off by LB DeMeco Ryans, who read Campbell's screen pass attempt to Ronnie Brown and returned it 85 yards for the Tide's first points of the day.
Any excitement from the Alabama faithful was destroyed when the Tigers took the ensuing kickoff and marched 78 yards on a time crunching, moment crushing drive. The Tigers used up nearly 8 minutes of clock and capped the drive on Williams' third TD of the day, a 7-yard scamper that put the Tigers up 35-7.
From there, both teams seemed to settle into a pattern of quality defense and a minimum of offense movement. Alabama, who turned to Guillon midway through the third quarter, were able to bring the score to 35-14 with the TD pass to Prothro late in the 3rd, but would get no closer in the game.
The Tigers finished out the scoring with another time consuming drive, led by backup QB Brandon Cox, who moved the ball effectively for the Tigers before Ronnie Brown finished off the scoring with a three yard plunge with 3 minutes to go and the Alabama faithful headed to the exits.
The loss dropped Alabama to 6-5 overall and 3-5 in the SEC this season and also brought their all time record to 0-9 against AP No. 2 teams. Auburn pushed their record to 11-0, 8-0 in the SEC and brought their all time record in Tuscaloosa to 5-0. Alabama will next take the field for a still to be determined bowl, must likely the Peach or Music City Bowl, while Auburn will make their case for the Orange Bowl and a shot for the national championship when they head to Atlanta for the SEC Championship game on December 4th.
