Spurrier humble? Ex-Gator is skeptical

South Carolina fans were introduced to a surprisingly humble Steve Spurrier last week when he was hired as the Gamecocks' new football coach.

"Hopefully, I've learned some humility," Spurrier said after being introduced as Lou Holtz's successor. "I know I've got a greater respect for all football coaches everywhere."

Former Florida offensive lineman Jeff Mitchell, who now plays for the Carolina Panthers, wasn't sold on the new Spurrier.

"That's a load of do-do," Mitchell told a reporter for The State newspaper.

"They've got some entertainment on the way, especially after they start winning," Mitchell added. "I'm glad I'm close enough to read the quotes."

Mitchell said everyone would know what Spurrier is thinking because he speaks his mind.

"If he's feeling cocky, he's going to come across that way," Mitchell said. "He knows he's good."

Tough For Shockley: Quarterback D.J. Shockley, Georgia's heir apparent to David Greene, struggled when called upon in Saturday's 19-13 victory against Georgia Tech.

After Greene was sidelined by an injured left thumb, Shockley completed five of 16 passes for 112 yards. He also was sacked four times for 45 yards in losses.

"I threw some bad balls," Shockley told the Athens Banner-Herald. "There also were some times when I held on to the ball too long. I've got to do a better job of that."

Cutcliffe Update: Ole Miss coach David Cutcliffe is expected to meet with athletic director Pete Boone about his job status this week.

When asked if he had any reason to believe he wouldn't return as coach, Cutcliffe told the Clarion-Ledger, "It's not up to me. That's not my decision."

Cutcliffe is 44-29 in six seasons at Ole Miss, which beat Mississippi State 20-3 on Saturday to finish the year 4-7.

If Cutcliffe returns, he might have to make changes on his staff.

One That Got Away: After a 43-14 loss to LSU on Friday, the Arkansas Razorbacks were thinking about South Carolina.

"South Carolina is the one that comes back and haunts you," Arkansas coach Houston Nutt told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. "That's the one that's toughest to get over."

The Razorbacks, who finished 5-6, led South Carolina four different times before losing 35-32 on Nov. 6.

"We were real close - that's how I would sum up this season," Arkansas defensive end Jeff Huckeba said. "You look at Texas, Georgia, South Carolina. If we win any of those games, we're going to a bowl."

Arkansas lost to Texas by two points and to Georgia by six.

LSU Broadens Recruiting: Keeping the best players in Louisiana has been a big factor in Nick Saban's success at LSU, but he also is looking elsewhere for talent.

Four of LSU's 10 recruiting commitments have come from out-of-state, including two from Texas and one from Alabama. Kevin Myers, a 6-foot-6, 340-pound offensive lineman from Compton Community College in Los Angeles, also has committed to LSU.

Extra Points: Ole Miss, which had given up 657 yards rushing in its previous two games, held Mississippi State star running back Jerious Norwood to 27 yards on 11 carries. Brandon Coutu, who hit a 44-yard field goal against Georgia Tech, replaced Andy Bailey of Athens, Tenn., as Georgia's placekicker after Bailey missed an extra-point try. With nine victories this season, LSU set a school record with 22 wins in two years.
