UT's bowl destination: Cotton or Sugar
Georgia accepted an invitation to the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla., to play Wisconsin.
Also, the Capital One Bowl announced it will invite either Auburn or LSU, depending on the outcome of the SEC championship game on Saturday.
Thus, Tennessee faces an either/or scenario.
If the Vols upset Auburn in Atlanta on Saturday, they go to the Sugar in New Orleans on Jan. 3.
Auburn would then go to the Capital One in Orlando, Fla., and LSU to the Cotton in Dallas.
If Auburn beats Tennessee, then Auburn goes to the Sugar, LSU to the Capital One and the Vols to Cotton on New Year's Day.
"I've talked to the Cotton Bowl today and we know it's going to be one of those two games,'' UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said.
"Our intentions are to win the SEC championship. But we have two great opportunities for our team and our fans.''
The Cotton opponent is expected to be Texas. As for the Sugar, the Atlantic Coast Conference or Big East champions are possibilities.
The Peach Bowl, meanwhile, wants to invite Florida, with Alabama landing in the Music City Bowl in Nashville. That would leave the Independence Bowl to select an at-large team to fill the SEC slot.
