Chizik on how UT sets up: call-and-run-it
Tennessee freshman quarterbacks Erik Ainge and Brent Schaeffer don't have similar privileges.
"Tennessee takes a lot of the decision-making process out of their hands," Auburn defensive coordinator Gene Chizik said. "I'm sure they have the leeway to check out of a few things, but I think it's more of a call-and-run-it."
Chizik said the quarterbacks look to the sideline for a play after the defense lines up.
"They're lining up and seeing what you line up in," Chizik said. "He (quarterback) is looking over at the sideline and they send in a new play."
Don't Sweat It: Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville has told kicker John Vaughn not to dwell on his two missed field goals and focus on the three kicks he has made.
"It didn't hurt us. Hopefully, when they count, we'll make 'em," Tuberville said.
Tuberville said the kicking game is better now than it was at this time last year.
"Our punter has been excellent, our coverage teams have been excellent," he said. "We've worked extra hard on it this year, including the last two weeks."
Remembering Schaeffer: UT quarterback Brent Schaeffer went to Auburn defensive back Junior Rosegreen's alma mater Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. before moving to Deerfield Beach, Fla. Rosegreen remembers catching sight of Schaeffer on the junior-varsity practice field at Dillard.
"I saw him throwing the ball and I was like, 'He's going to be a pretty good quarterback,'" Rosegreen said. "He's a baby Michael Vick."
Although Schaeffer has started the first three games, Erik Ainge has gotten most of the playing time in relief.
Rosegreen doesn't expect to rattle either quarterback "I know he's young, but that don't mean a thing" --but said the quarterbacks will have a tougher time with the Tigers' more-stable secondary.
Rosegreen spent 2003 as a corner, but moved to safety this year, where he said he is better able to help on run support. In one-on-one matchups, opposing teams rarely pick on Carlos Rogers.
"I think we're better just because I'm back at safety," Rosegreen said.
Chizik's Scouting: Chizik is convinced the Vols will be better in the running game than a year ago.
"It looks like they've made a concerted effort this year to run the football first," he said.
A successful rushing attack led by Cedric Houston and Gerald Riggs Jr. could take pressure off the quarterbacks. And if that works, Chizik said it would the most difficult test the Tigers' defense has faced this season.
"They're saying, 'We're running and you've got to stop it,' '' he said. "Up to this point, nobody's done that."
No Big Deal: Anthony Mix said receivers won't be affected much by the noise at Neyland Stadium.
"It's not that big of a deal, as long as we get the play from inside the huddle," he said. "The only thing that's big for wide-outs is the audibles. We audible a lot, but we have hand signals that kind of help us."
Like all the Tigers, Mix has never played in Knoxville, but he said he's not intimidated by the crowd.
"I heard that it gets loud, but loud is loud," he said. "Anywhere you go, it's loud. If you can't hear, you can't hear."
Injury Watch: Tuberville said true freshman running back Brad Lester had injured his foot and would miss Saturday's game.
Senior defensive end Doug Langenfeld practiced with the first team Wednesday after missing Tuesday's practice with a bruised thigh.
