Campbell's turnaround turning heads

Imagine trying to mount a Jason Campbell-for-All-SEC-quarterback campaign in August. Imagine all the snickers.

Now, you would get votes, not snickers.

After three years as a middle-of-the-road SEC quarterback or worse, Auburn's Campbell has become the most efficient player at his position in the conference. And if you took a vote for the all-conference quarterback today, he should win in a landslide.

Campbell led the SEC in pass efficiency before he completed 17 of 19 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns in Auburn's 38-20 victory over Arkansas on Saturday. Campbell has now passed for 13 touchdowns and only two interceptions in seven games for the undefeated Tigers.

Auburn's first-year offensive coordinator, Al Borges, couldn't be happier.

"It's nice to have a plan, but even better to have players who can make plays," Borges told The Mobile Register after Auburn gained 522 yards. "(Campbell) has committed himself to becoming a passer.

"When I came here and we sat down and talked, I told him, 'You may run for yards but you'll throw for miles.' "

Fum-Bull, It's Loose: Keith Jackson should have done the play-by-play of the South Carolina-Kentucky game. Just think of all the times he could have exclaimed, "Fum-bull!"

South Carolina fumbled three times and lost two in the first quarter of its 12-7 victory. Kentucky quickly upstaged the Gamecocks by losing three fumbles in the second quarter.

Nonetheless, for Kentucky, this constitutes improvement.

"It's better than the loss last week (45-17 to Alabama), but it's still a loss," Kentucky coach Rich Brooks said.

Simply Awful: Georgia middle linebacker Odell Thurman was surprised but grateful that the Vanderbilt downsized its offense for the Bulldogs, who won 33-3 in Athens.

"We thought that was one of their key assets, that they could come out in all different formations - they can run the ball; they can pass the ball - but they kind of kept it simple for us," Thurman told The Tennessean.

Fresh Runners: Vanderbilt coach Bobby Johnson replaced veteran running backs Norval McKenzie and Kwane Doster with freshmen Cassen Jackson-Garrison and Jeff Jennings in an attempt to rejuvenate a foundering running game.

Jackson, who starred at Central High School, had the best day by far, gaining 37 yards on five carries.

Jennings, who played at Jefferson County, had six carries for a yard.

Fresh Defense: Florida replaced its two suspended defensive starters - linebacker Channing Crowder and safety Jarvis Herring - with true freshmen Brandon Siler and Kyle Jackson in a 52-16 victory against Middle Tennessee State.

Top 25: My AP ballot looked like this: 1. Auburn, 2. Southern California, 3. Oklahoma, 4. Miami, 5. Utah, 6. California, 7. Wisconsin, 8. Florida State, 9. Tennessee, 10. Georgia, 11. Texas, 12. Purdue, 13. Louisville, 14. Michigan, 15. Texas A&M, 16. Oklahoma State, 17. Virginia, 18. Boise State, 19. Arizona State, 20. LSU, 21. Florida. 22. Virginia Tech, 23. West Virginia, 24. UAB, 25. Notre Dame.
