LUNDY: Best and Worst

Worst Confusion: Water bottles apparently need to be sold with instructions at South Carolina. Several frustrated Gamecock fans fired plastic bottles on the field when they got upset after the refs didn't call UT for running into the punter. At most places they sell bottles to drink from, not to throw.

Best Belated Birthday: A week after his 23rd birthday, converted running back Corey Larkins was inserted in the lineup as an extra defensive back who blitzed on several third-down situations, including the first defensive series of the game.

Worst Clock: Somebody would make a ton of money if they invented a clock that worked at a UT game, home or away. The scoreboard clock at Williams-Brice Stadium malfunctioned most of the first quarter.

Best Farewell: As South Carolina coach Lou Holtz passed UT running back Cedric Houston on his way out of the stadium, he stopped and said, "Congratulations, you have a fine team."

Best Lecture: UT running backs coach Trooper Taylor got in the face of UT fullback Cory Anderson after his holding penalty wiped out an 11-yard pass completion.

Worst Break: On UT's second series in the third quarter, quarterback Brent Schaeffer was hit on Carolina's sideline and landed hard after releasing the pass. He made it to UT's sidelines and then leaned back flat on his back for several minutes in obvious pain. After being examined by trainers, he was cleared to return to action. He had one more rush later in the period. It was later revealed Schaeffer had a broken collarbone.

Best Hit: UT's defensive back Corey Campbell knocked South Carolina's Matthew Thomas halfway to next week with a ferocious lick on an incomplete pass on the first series.

Best Escape: UT's Erik Ainge, under heavy pressure, avoided a loss by dumping a pass to Gerald Riggs on a third-down pass that gained 4 yards, enabling the Vols to keep the ball and later score, just before halftime.
