Riggs looks to expand role in UT backfield

Heralded back hopes breakout game is just around the corner

You've heard it before: Tennessee tailback Gerald Riggs is due for a breakout game.

Riggs is coming off a career-high 15-carry game against Florida, and against UNLV, had a career-high 79 yards.

Those are not the kind of numbers the junior envisioned when he signed with the Vols.

But until someone separates from the tailback pack, those are the kind of numbers Riggs knows to expect.

"I would like to get to a point where I'm the one back,'' Riggs said. "But everyone is playing well right now, and rotating allows guys not to get beat up as much. Right now, it's working.''

Houston has started the first two games and is expected to start Saturday against Louisiana Tech.

Riggs has heard about how all of the backs have different styles: Cedric Houston with his slashing runs, Corey Larkins with his speed, and Jabari Davis with his ability to pound up the middle.

Riggs believes he's able to do all that and a lot more.

"I don't think there's anything that can be done by the others that I can't do,'' Riggs said. "And I can make people miss ... and by making guys miss, I can get outside a bit more.''

So far, the longest run of the season by a UT back is 28 yards by Houston against UNLV.

Riggs said it's a matter of time before someone breaks one longer.

"Guys just haven't got into a rhythm yet,'' Riggs said. "When you have a lot of guys, that's something you sacrifice a little bit.

"In the third quarter, I felt at that point I could have handled 10 or 15 more carries. I wasn't tired. I felt like I was ready to take over the game. But I understand the coaches just want us to win.''

Riggs said he has matured to the point where he's willing to stay within the game plan and wait his turn. But if push comes to shove, and he's on the sideline while the UT run game is struggling, it will get more difficult.

"We just want to win, whatever it takes,'' Riggs said. "The ultimate goal is to play for the SEC Championship and a national championship.

"We're tired of hearing how Tennessee has had a drop-off at tailback.''

Riggs takes it as personal as anyone. After all, wearing the No. 31 formerly worn by UT great Jamal Lewis is an every day reminder.

"I grew up watching Jamal and the great things he did here,'' Riggs said. "But I'm wearing that jersey now, and that's all that matters. I'm anxious to be called on.''
