Antioch's Brown offered scholarship by UT

Preston Brown is one of the top prospects in the state of Tennessee. Brown recently received a scholarship offer from Tennessee. Josh Ward visited with the 5-foot-11, 185-pound tailback/cornerback from Antioch High School.

What schools are you interested in?

"I really like Miami. That's the school I want to go to. I also like UT, Auburn, UNC, Kentucky."

Which schools have offered you?

"Kentucky and Tennessee. Tennessee offered last week some time."

If Miami made you an offer, would you commit to the Hurricanes?

"Most likely. Then again, UT is my home, born and raised. It'd be a hard decision. I still want to see all the places and see what they're like."

What are some advantages of going to Tennessee?

"I could learn the plays real quick with LaMarcus (Coker) going there. We're real close and we'll keep in touch. We'll be talking a lot."

Would you like to play with LaMarcus Coker in college?

"Yeah it would be nice to play with him again. We've played with each other. We know each other. If he comes out of the game after a mistake I'd tell him what he did wrong. If I came out of the game after a mistake, he'd tell me. Something like, 'Watch the back side. Go on the other side.' We know each other real well."

Compare yourself to LaMarcus.

"We're both fast. Lamarcus is so fast, he's like lightning. No one can tackle him. He'll shake you. Once he gets past the line it's over. He's more of an outside runner and I'm more of an inside guy than out. I like to follow Barry Sanders. He's my favorite player. I watched a lot on him and try to do some of the things he does."

What are some advantages of having both you and LaMarcus on the field together?

"They don't know who to watch. If he gets the ball a couple of times, they expect him to get it. Then I get it and they can't tackle me. They hit me but don't tackle me. I like to get hit. It makes me run harder."

What makes you a good running back?

"I have really good strength in short yardage runs. I can break outside and make a play. I have good vision. Someone will come up in my blindside and think I don't see them. Then I'll just shake them."

Does it matter to you if a school is bring in another running back in your class?

"It doesn't matter. When I get on campus and on the field, I'm going to play hard and practice hard. If he beats me out he'll have to play hard. He'll have to out work me. I'm going to work my butt off."

Do you see yourself as a better running back or cornerback?

"It really doesn't matter. I just like to play the game. Defense may make me work harder on offense. Then if I miss a play on defense I'll work harder on offense. If I get hit hard on offense, I'll go hit someone hard on defense. It really doesn't matter whether it's offense or defense. I'd say it's 50-50."

What makes you a good cornerback?

"I know the plays well. Me being physical gives me an advantage. Before the snap I may come up and bump the receiver. If I can't make my way to a running back with the ball I'll just take out the blockers and leave the running back for my teammates to get him. I just play physical."

Is UT looking at you to play offense or defense?

"Either one. Whichever one can get me on the field."

Which coaches do you know from UT?

"Trooper. He's a real cool, down to earth guy. Coach Fulmer is cool too. They get down to business. Once they've known you for a while they'll just talk with you and joke with you."

What do you think about the talent level at Tennessee?

"It's great. They've got one of the best recruiting classes. They picked up a lot of great people. It'd be a great deal to play with them. I'd learn a lot more from them and they'd make me better than I am now."

What do you run in track?

"I run the 100 and 200. I'm going to the Great Eight in Nashville April 21st. It takes the top eight runners from each event in Nasvhille. If I can get first or second in those then I'll be up there pretty high. LaMarcus and I battle each other. He runs the 100. He barely beat me in the qualifying for the Great Eight. He ran a 10.54 in the 100 and I ran a 10.59."

What camps do you have planned for the summer?

"I'm going to the Nike camp in Atlanta. Then I'm going to Miami, UT and Auburn. I'll probably go to North Carolina State too but we'll see on that."
