The players, facing misdemeanor assault charges after an incident that occurred in a UT campus dormitory on April 10, have a preliminary hearing set for May 23.
The altercation was taped by a surveillance camera at the dorm, according to police. The video shows UT student Quantavious Emerson, 18, holding a metal bat and yelling at Schaeffer and his girlfriend. A few minutes later, Schaeffer grabbed Emerson and threw him to the floor, causing injury.
Smith also was charged with assault for allegedly striking Emerson while he was on the floor.
Schaeffer and Smith have been indefinitely suspended from the team. Neither participated in Saturday's Orange and White spring scrimmage, which brought an end to Tennessee's spring football practice.
Schaeffer, a sophomore, is battling for the Vols' starting quarterback job. Smith, a junior, led UT receivers with five touchdown receptions last season.
Two other Vols, linebacker Jerod Mayo and defensive end Robert Ayers, are scheduled to be arraigned in Knox County General Sessions Court today. They were arrested last Tuesday on aggravated assault charges after an off-campus altercation with fraternity members in March.
Mike Griffith covers University of Tennessee football. He may be reached at 965-342-6289.
