Draft puts Bowden ahead of Fulmer

Phillip Fulmer has relinquished his throne as the collegiate coach to produce the most NFL picks since his first full season in 1993.

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden passed Tennessee's coach on Sunday when the Seminoles finished with nine players selected in this year's NFL draft.

Florida State has had 78 picked since the 1994 draft, while Tennessee, with only three - linebacker Kevin Burnett, punter Dustin Colquitt and running back Cedric Houston - selected this weekend, has 75 in that time span. Ohio State is next with 74 and then there's Miami, with 69.

"I'd say we're in good company,'' Fulmer said when asked how he felt about Bowden and Florida State passing him by. "I'd expect we'll have a number of players taken next year if they work hard and stay healthy."

Indeed, the Vols could tie or break the school record (10) for most players drafted next season.

Barring injuries or off-the-field issues, at least six seniors on defense figure to be drafted: Cornerback Jason Allen, linebackers Kevin Simon, Omar Gaither and Jason Mitchell, defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona and end Parys Haralson.

Offensively, linemen Cody Douglas and Albert Toeaina, tailback Gerald Riggs and receiver Chris Hannon are all solid draft prospects.

The Vols also have a few underclassmen who would be draftable.
