UT Notebook: August 22

Parys Haralson isn't the only defensive end worth talking about.

Sure, he's the leader of the group, the captain of the team, and the most established of UT's defensive ends.

He had 21 quarterback hurries last season, which tied the UT record, and 13.5 tackles-for-loss including seven sacks.

However, the speed rusher from Flora, Miss., isn't the only end impressing UT's coaches.

UT senior defensive end Jason Hall was a consistent, disruptive force during Saturday night's scrimmage. Steve Caldwell wasn't surprised.

"Jason is a finesse guy," said UT's defensive end coach. "He really knows how to set a guy up and do some good things. He's got a special knack about pass rush."

Hall's two sacks weren't the only contributions from UT's defensive ends. Sophomore Xavier Mitchell, who is recovering from off-season back surgery, had three tackles, a sack, and pass breakup.

"It looked like they were pretty active, especially early," Caldwell said. "I'm happy where they're at right now."

Sophomore Antonio Reynolds and freshman Robert Ayers join Hall, Mitchell and Haralson. Reynolds and Ayers are still learning the position but both have impressed UT's coaches with their potential.

O-Line Report: UT head coach Phillip Fulmer said he was pleased with Anthony Parker's scrimmage efforts Saturday at center and said the freshman was the most improved offensive lineman.

Rob Smith's transition from guard to center also pleased Fulmer.

"We did dome good things," Fulmer said. "We could come out of this better than we were."

Smith, who started 13 games last season at left guard, appears to be a strong leading candidate at center. Fulmer said Ramon Foster will start at left guard if Smith stays at center.

UT's coaches are trying to replace junior David Ligon and senior Richie Gandy. Both centers suffered injuries during camp that will keep them out until mid-September.

"I thought I did pretty good," Smith said after reviewing the scrimmage tape. "Besides one mental mistake, I was pretty happy with my performance for the first time playing there."

Close Fellows: Sophomore cornerback Roshaun Fellows said UT's defensive backfield is starting to jell. The first-team secondary consists of Fellows at left cornerback, senior Jason Allen at right cornerback and junior Antwan Stewart and freshman Jonathan Hefney at safety.

"Right now, we have a lot of trust in our safeties," Fellows said. "They gained a lot of it (trust on Saturday night). I'm very proud of Antwan and Hefney. I'm very comfortable. If I'm jamming a receiver, I know there's a safety over top."

Unforgivable: Fulmer said freshman tailback LaMarcus Coker ran harder, tougher and with more creativity in Saturday's scrimmage than previously. He also isn't forgetting Coker fumbled twice.

"You don't cancel out two fumbles," Fulmer said. "When the play is over you better have the football or you'll be standing with me or watching it on television somewhere."

Starters Anyone: Fulmer wouldn't specify when he would announce a starting quarterback. Most think an announcement will come later this week in the battle between senior Rick Clausen and sophomore Erik Ainge.

Happy Camper: UT tailback Gerald Riggs Jr. and 40 other players were named to the Walter Camp "player to watch" list. The award goes to the top player in the country.

Injury Report: Freshman tailback Montario Hardesty did not practice Monday after suffering a deep thigh bruise Saturday. Fulmer said he expected Hardesty to miss only a couple of days. Junior cornerback Jonathan Wade practiced Monday but was limited.

Freshman defensive lineman Vladimir Richard practiced Monday despite a sore ankle. Freshman tailback Ja'Kouri Williams (knee) and junior defensive back Jarod Parrish (knee) did not practice. Mitchell (unspecified) did not practice. Junior wide receiver Jayson Swain (knee) returned to practice.

Gandy, Ligon and freshman linebacker Rico McCoy (foot) also did not practice.

Waiting: Freshman defensive lineman Gerald Williams has a NCAA Clearinghouse issue, Fulmer said, adding he didn't expect the issue to linger.

Williams has been one of the more impressive freshmen during fall practice. He did not practice Monday.

Not Hostile Ready: Fulmer said he doubted freshman wide receivers Lucas Taylor or Austin Rogers will be used as kick or punt returners because of UT's tough early road schedule.

Scrimmage Change:_Tonight's 8 o'clock scrimmage will not be full contact, UT coaches decided late Monday.

Fun Day: UT coaches and players were scheduled to take the afternoon off Monday to visit a local farm to relax. The itinerary included fishing and softball. UT held a 90-minute workout Monday morning in shorts and helmets.
