Uncharted waters await Trojans
Army and Nebraska came the closest to a "three-peat."
Army won national championships in 1944 and 1945 and finished second in 1946. Nebraska came within a field goal of beating Florida State for the 1993 national championship. The Cornhuskers won the national championship in 1994 and 1995.
College teams that have won back-to-back national championships, and how they fared the third year:
- Minnesota 1940-41, 19th in 1942
- Army 1944-45, second in 1946
- Oklahoma 1955-56, fourth in 1957
- Alabama 1964-65, third in 1966
- *Texas 1969-70, 12th in 1971
- Nebraska 1970-71, fourth in 1972
- Oklahoma 1974-75, fifth in 1976
- Alabama 1978-79, sixth in 1980
- Nebraska 1994-95, sixth in 1996
- Southern Cal 2003-2004, in 2005?
* Texas was No. 1 in the final UPI top 20 poll in 1970. The AP poll, which was taken after the bowl games, had Nebraska No. 1 in 1970.
