Southern California is one of 11 college football teams to win back-to-back national championships, according to the AP, UPI and USA Today/ESPN polls. No team has ever won three consecutive titles.

Army and Nebraska came the closest to a "three-peat."

Army won national championships in 1944 and 1945 and finished second in 1946. Nebraska came within a field goal of beating Florida State for the 1993 national championship. The Cornhuskers won the national championship in 1994 and 1995.

College teams that have won back-to-back national championships, and how they fared the third year:

* Texas was No. 1 in the final UPI top 20 poll in 1970. The AP poll, which was taken after the bowl games, had Nebraska No. 1 in 1970.
