SEC East notebook
First, he got the high school coaches in South Carolina peeved when he said he'd pull scholarships of players he considered non-productive or academic problems.
Now, he's taking away sweets from his players.
Spurrier is stopping the Gamecocks' tradition of receiving baked goods from fans following Thursday practices during game weeks.
Guess that means Aunt Bee won't be stopping by with Andy, Barney, Thelma Lou, Howard Sprague, Floyd the Barber, Goober and Gomer.
"We have eliminated that Thursday deal they have here, the fans giving them cookies and cakes and all that," Spurrier said. "We don't need a lot of cookies on Thursday afternoon before games."
Middle linebacker Ricardo Hurley said the law of Spurrier is the law.
"It's coach Spurrier's rules, so we've got to follow them," Hurley said. "Everybody's eating right. That's something they didn't do in the past. Guys tended to eat a lot of junk food."
Also no sweets will keep Carolina in good standing with the NCAA. In February, the school self-reported a secondary violation to the NCAA because the cookies and cakes were viewed as an extra benefit.
Rackin' the sacks
Florida defensive Ray McDonald says that the Gators' defensive line alone will have 40 sacks this season. Huh? The Gators haven't had more than 30 as a team the last five years. The school record is 50, set in 1997. "We know what we have to get done," said McDonald, who has seven career sacks. "We have to play hard every play."
For the second straight season, Kentucky has sustained significant injuries in preseason camp, with five key players going down. UK coach Rich Brooks said it was bad luck, not too much contact, that caused the injuries. "We probably had less contact that any fall camp that I've been a part of in my 21 years of coaching," Brooks said.
