Nutt fires coach; others reassigned
Blue-chip QB may look elsewhere; UT in hunt
Sources said that Nutt, who decided he no longer wants to call plays, wanted to hire Wittke as offensive coordinator. But Arkansas athletic director Frank Broyles desired a bigger name as offensive coordinator and ordered Nutt to fire Wittke, 46, who will be paid the remaining year of his contract after three seasons on Nutt's staff.
Also, sources said that Nutt will re-assign receivers coach James Shibest to another position on the staff and have director of football operations Louis Campbell return to the field to coach in the secondary.
Campbell, who has 30 years experience as a college assistant and administrator, was previously a Razorbacks' assistant for nine years under three Arkansas coaches, ending with Danny Ford just before Nutt's hiring.
It isn't known what new position Shibest will coach. It also isn't known who Campbell will replace in the secondary, which has two coaches -- Bobby Allen for the cornerbacks and Chris Vaughn for the safeties.
Nutt, Broyles and Wittke were not available for comment on Tuesday.
Wittke was noticeably absent at Saturday's Class AAAAA state championship game, won 54-20 by Springdale over West Memphis. He had been the primary recruiter of Springdale's Mitch Mustain, one of the nation's best high school quarterbacks, who committed to Arkansas over Notre Dame on Aug. 15.
It's not clear whether Mustain is still an Arkansas commitment.
Tennessee, with new offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe, has made a strong push for Mustain. Cutcliffe, in his few months on Notre Dame's staff earlier this year before heart surgery forced him to resign, had started recruiting Mustain for the Irish. Cutcliffe was at Mustain's game on Saturday.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, citing sources, said that Mustain withdrew his commitment over the weekend.
Mustain, Springdale coach Gus Malzahn (who is thought to be the prime candidate for the Hogs' receivers coach vacancy) and Mustain's mother, Beck Campbell, all declined comment on Monday night when Mustain was honored as the Gatorade National High School Player of the Year.
Mustain was 329-of 492 passing for 5,981 yards and 67 touchdowns in his two seasons as a starter. This year, he set the state AAAAA single-season record with 3,817 yards passing.
One of the reasons Mustain may be wavering from the Hogs is his family hadn't been apprised of Wittke's status. Now, Fresno State offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti is thought to be the leading candidate for the Arkansas vacancy. UAB offensive coordinator Pat Sullivan's name also surfaced on Tuesday.
