QB Nelson likes UT's offense

Arvell Nelson knows about Tennessee football. Now he wants to know about the UT coaching staff.

The quarterback from Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio, will visit UT this weekend. Nelson said UT began expressing interest in him last month.

Nelson said he will use his trip to Knoxville this weekend to familiarize himself with UT’s coaches, including new offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe. He said he already has an idea about the Vols’ style of offense.

"I know they like to throw the ball," the 6-foot-4, 177-pounder said. "They like to get the ball into their playmakers’ hands. Their quarterback is free. He can make decisions on his own."

UT’s offense is one Nelson believes could allow him to thrive.

"My whole game would fit right in the offense," he said. "I can throw the ball. The coaching staff could put the game in my hands."

"I feel I can make plays and I feel I can lead a team."

Nelson is also considering Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan State. He said Iowa is his leader because of how long he has known the Hawkeyes’ coaching staff.

Nelson said he is not bothered by UT’s disappointing 5-6 season in 2005. He said the Vols need to take advantage of this offseason to get back on track.

"I know that’s a great program," he said. "You have one down year. The next year you have a great recruiting class and you’re back on top."

Nelson will be accompanied to Knoxville by two of his teammates, wide receiver Raymond Small and defensive end Robert Rose.

Nelson, who Small called his best friend, said the chance to play with his high school teammates will be an important factor.

Still, Nelson’s main focus this weekend will be getting to know UT’s coaching staff.

"You’ve got to know," Nelson said, "who you’re playing for."
