A closer look: The players

Here's a look at the Tennessee men's basketball players through the first five games with their points per game, rebounds per game, free throw percentage, assists total, turnover total, steals and average minutes played per game.

Dane Bradshaw, 6-foot-4, G-F

Positives: Conditioning, intelligence, defense, rebounding, crowd favorite.

Negatives: Shooting percentage, creating own shot, perimeter defense.

Question: Can Bradshaw continue to rebound and battle the bigs in SEC competition?

Bruce Pearl Says: "Dane is a guy that everyone can root for. Whether he's overachieving or not, it's too early to say. But he's clearly somebody that makes our team better when he's on the floor.''

Major Wingate, 6-10, C

Positives: Consistent scoring, full-court pressure defense on the ball, post defense.

Negatives: Rebounding, shot selection, scoring close to the basket

Question: Can Wingate elevate his game to the SEC level?

Pearl Says: "I think Major can elevate his game. And while I'm happy with his play, I think he could score, rebound and help defend even better.''

Chris Lofton, 6-2, G

Positives: Shooting, assist-turnover ratio, clutch performer, full-court defense and scrappy rebounding.

Negatives: Gets lost off the ball defensively, coasts at times offensively.

Question: Can Lofton shoulder the scoring burden down the stretch?

Pearl Says: "Chris is more than just a shooter. He can also create offense for himself and others off the dribble.''

C.J. Watson, 6-2, G

Positives: Leadership, ball-handling, court vision, 3-point shooting, clutch performer.

Negatives: Doesn't advance the ball upcourt quick enough, doesn't create his own shot often enough.

Question: Can Watson continue to take over games in the clutch?

Pearl Says: "As long as C.J. doesn't have to play 37 minutes a game, he'll be in position offensively and defensively to help us win games in the end.''

Stanley Asumnu, 6-5, F

Positives: great athleticism, pull-up shot in the lane, good defender, hustles, plays with confidence.

Negatives: Not involved in rebounding enough, outside shooting range limited.

Question: Can Asumnu continue to grow in Pearl's user-friendly system?

Pearl Says: "Stanley is a productive player. He needs to use his athleticism offensive and defensively.''

Andre Patterson, 6-7, F-C

Positives: Interior moves, rebounding, work ethic and attitude.

Negatives: Inconsistent intensity, due to late start and playing two positions, still learning system

Question: Can he match up with premier big men in SEC?

Pearl Says: "Andre can be a tough match up because of his quickness inside.''

JaJuan Smith, 6-2, G

Positives: Quickness, passing in transition, shooting range, defensive intensity.

Negatives: Inconsistent shooting attempts, unforced turnovers in half-court.

Question: Can Smith handle pressure situations at guard off the bench?

Pearl Says: "JaJuan gives us some instant energy offensively and defensively off the bench. I think JaJuan could be even more productive.''

Ryan Childress, 6-9, F-C

Positives: Physical presence, plays aggressive, shows upside.

Negatives: Slow afoot, ball handling, low shooting percentage, confidence.

Question: When will Childress kick it into a higher gear?

Pearl says: "Ryan is a freshman and we're asking a lot of him. I've seen him play much better than this.''

Jordan Howell, 6-3, G

Positives: Plays with confidence, handles the ball well, hustles, good outside shooter.

Negatives: Physical limitations, lack of experience, needs to get quicker.

Question: Can he continue to provide a spark off the bench?

Pearl Says: "Based on Jordan's last two outings, Jordan has elevated himself to being C.J.'s backup, whereas I had Dane there. My confidence has grown in him as his confidence has grown in himself.''
