Vols after Ohio trio

Tennessee is trying to hit a triple in the land of the Indians.

The Vols are hoping they can secure football commitments from three Cleveland, Ohio prospects: Arvell Nelson, Robert Rose and Raymond Small.

The three stars from Glenville High School took their official visits to Knoxville this weekend and were headed home late Monday night.

Small is, by all accounts, an exciting prospect. Small's high school coach, Ted Ginn Sr., isn't afraid to compare Small to his son, Ted Ginn Jr., who is a highly regarded sophomore receiver and return specialist at Ohio State.

Ginn Sr. said Small could be as good or better than Ginn Jr. and will likely be faster in college than the Buckeye star.

"He's very explosive, pretty knowledgeable about the game, and basically is a great kid with God-given talent," Ginn Sr. said.

Ginn Sr. said he expects the 5-foot-10, 175-pounder to be an every-down receiver or cornerback in college. Either way, Ginn Sr. expects Small to make an impact.

"For the three years he's been here, you get the ball in his hands and he can go," Ginn Sr. said. "There are certain things that you can't coach."

Small has visited Ohio State and Southern Cal. He will visit Michigan State next week.

As for Rose, potential is the best way to describe the 6-4, 255-pound defensive end/tight end.

"He has a pro-style body," Ginn Sr. said. "There is not very many kids in the country like him. A lot of his game is still ahead of him."

Ginn Sr. said Rose is considering UT, Ohio State, Michigan State, LSU and Southern Cal.

Ginn Sr. also had fond things to say about his quarterback.

"He reminds me of that old-style pocket passer," Ginn Sr. said. "He'll stand in the pocket with a rifle arm, a Johnny Unitas-type guy."

Ginn Sr. said fans shouldn't get excited about a recruiting package deal. He said each prospect is considering his own options.

"I think everybody," Ginn Sr. said, "is trying to find their way."

As for other recruiting ties, Ginn Sr. said each of the three players has a good relationship with his son but downplayed the effect that could have on their decision.

"Maybe so, maybe not," Ginn Sr. said referring to a natural tie to the Buckeyes. "They're trying to take a look at all the teams that they are interested in."
